I still have extremely happy memories
of listening to RSVP on CBC FM.
Taught me a lot about classical music
& often ventured into baroque (though not ancient).
Leon used Respighi's Ancient Airs & Dances
as one of his (memorable) signature themes.
I'll never forget the day he played my phone message on air
to introduce Mozart's Masonic Cantata.

Please accept our sincere condolences... Leon was a special friend to my parents, Harro and Margot Garmsen, due to sharing the CBC and Unitarianism. And he was the first to encourage me to sing in public, which resulted in my (Susanne's) singing career, such as it has been, of 50 years. Thank you! We will always remember him.

Leon was a neighbour, co-worker, and general all-round delight. I never walk down Palmerston without thinking of him and Jacqui. I have warm memories of time spent with him, but the strongest are a number of Christmas parties he and Jacqui held for neighbour children. This year's midwinter will be all the bleaker for this sad news.

Jacqui and Leon were our neighbours on Tupper Grove. You couldn't really ask for more wonderful people to live next door. I remember Leon was always delighted when our Siamese cats wandered over for to say hello. Sincere condolences to Jacqui and family.

Dear Allen, Holly, and Family,
It has been a long time since we've played catch across the road, pool in the basement, and Risk upstairs. These times and more we will not forget. Now, sadly we must acknowledge the loss of your dad and we're thinking of you at this difficult time.
Respectfully your old neighbours on Southill Drive.

How sad I was to learn about Leon's passing.....
For a few years af CBC Winnipeg, Leon was my "next door" office neighbour, and how lucky was I!
I got to listen to marvellous classical music all day, with a good measure of Gilbert and Sullivan thrown in, plus enjoy the company of a super nice guy.
My deepest sympathy, Jacqui, you were a great couple.

Dear Leon,
I didn't even know you were a composer and an organist, man! We recorded three radio shows of my music and you never even told me you were a musician yourself!
I was a kid and figured you were just some guy with culture and a good ear, kindly manner toward just-starting-out singer-songwriters. I figured you'd studied Music History or English or something...
So you were a composer and even scored films...and yet you made me feel like I was gifted, that I had a future as a composer although I could barely write music.
So I've been trying to get in touch for months, lately via Holly, who I didn't even know was your daughter until I read an article about you. It's her agent who wrote me back today.
The last time I saw you, you let me crash on your couch in St. John; it was '82 or '83 and there was a baby. You might have told me about your being a composer and an organist that night except Jacqui--who I'd just met--and I talked about "The Boys on the Bus" and Watergate and journalism. lol
And you knew I was from Boston but I don't even remember you telling me you loved the Red Sox--my childhood revolved around the Sox! When they finally won the World Series, I was on the phone from Montreal to my grandfather in Boston within seconds--he'd been waiting 86 years…
So why have I been trying to get touch?
Because I wrote a book that you (and especially Jacqui) would like and I wanted to send it. And I wanted to tell you that I graduated in Composition from U. de Montréal...and thank you for helping that happen.
Plus, ever since I found out you were a composer and an organist--an organist! do you know how hard an instrument that is?! I guess you do but you'd say it wasn't all that hard, being modest--I've wanted to apologize for not asking you more about YOU.
Here's something your kids don't know...That last recording session we did? After having done one with my band and one with my band in concert, you let me come in and do a bunch of songer-songwriter stuff, JUST me and my guitar. You joked about it being music from my "embryo period".
But it allowed me to travel from Montreal to Moncton to spend a week with my girlfriend. That's the main reason you let me do it, to be a nice guy, a producer who brings people home and feeds them and lets them sleep over. A friend.
I'll miss your being on this planet, man. And I send my love to Jacqui and Holly and the ex-baby and everyone else in your tribe. But I'll always remember the glow...in your eyes and smile and the very skin of your face, the warmth, the encouragement, the love.

Leon is one of my favourite CBC colleagues ever. I met him and Jacqui when we were part of the crew that founded the CBC Saint John station in 1978. And have stayed in touch the 40 years since. Leon is one of most joyful people I have ever met. And, one of the most beloved. His many many accomplishments are listed in the obituary attached. The Boston Red Sox and Gilbert and Sullivan operettas have lost their #1 Canadian fan. One more Leon accomplishment which brought him much joy: he was a member of the 1979 CBC New Brunswick champion softball team the CBD Saint John Expo-ses. As was his son Allen.
Rest well, my friend.

To Jacqui and the Cole Family -
"It was a great party" - Yes, it was! And the best part, for me, was being among folks who felt the same way about Gilbert and Sullivan as the two of you did. When it comes to G. & S., there are two schools of thought -- Either you think it's a load of Victorian twaddle or the thirteen operettas of the canon stick in your brain for ever!
I did my first G. & S. at 14 and came to the end of my journey many, many years later with Grand Duke in the Great Hall of the Faculty Club at Dalhousie University. Leon - you were part of that journey and I am so, so grateful.

Dear Leon was a close friend of John (Darb) Chambers, my late twin brother. He kindly offered to host a life celebration for his “old gang” friend at the cottage in July, 2017. It was a typically generous gesture , and a wonderful time was had by family and mutual friends. Jacqui was settling her mother into a nursing home at the time, and I so appreciated her adding this event at a challenging time for the family. I have so many memories of Leon- mostly musical. He was one of many talented boys of our generation who went on to have careers in music. I loved- and missed- RSVP. My condolences to Jacqui and all family and friends who share my sadness that Leon is gone.

I wanted to reach out to pass on our deepest sympathies to the entire Cole family from all of the McDonough family! Leon was an amazing person with such a positive zest for life and talented in so many ways! He had so many family and friends who cared about him and the pride for his kids/grandkids was always apparent when chatting with him. I will always be personally grateful for the incredible support both Jackie and Leon did relating to the opening of the Spatz Theatre/ Citadel Theatre Society through the Gilbert and Sullivan Society as it made a significant impact on its success!
Justin McDonough and family!
