Allan Joseph MacIntyre

1938-2019

With broken hearts we the family of Allan “Allie” MacIntyre, 81, of Glace Bay announce his passing on Monday, December 2nd, 2019. Allie passed away at the CB Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Glace Bay, Allie was the son of the late Allen & Jennifer (McNeil) MacIntyre. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his mother's family, Agnus “Aunt Aggie” & John “Da Neil”.

In 1959, Al married the love of his life Hughena Whalen at Holy Cross Parish, where he was a devoted member, and happily renewed those vows in 1984 and again in 2009.

Allan worked with the Federal Government for over 30 years, and was known locally as the “Pension Man” for his work with CPP. He was also President of National Health & Welfare Union for many years and after he retired from the public service, he started his own consulting company, Innes-MacIntyre & Associates with his long-time friend Jackie.

Allie was also very proud of his work with various local clubs and professional associations including PSAC, FSNA, ECBC, CBCDA, the Miner’s Museum, the Savoy Theatre, Holy Cross Parish, and the Glace Bay Pensioner’s Club.

Al will be fondly remembered for his wit, compassion, intelligence, patience, and amazing strength.

Al will be very sadly missed by his surviving family, son Michael (Carla) & his children Devon, Breanna, and Samantha, daughter Debbie with whom he resided & her daughter Jessica, who Allie helped raise. Also surviving are his brother John, brothers-in-law Lou (Patsy) and Rannie (Marilyn); sister-in-law Lucy Jackson; many nieces & nephews; special family friend Karen MacLean; as well as companion Ruth Hiscock.

Besides his parents, Allie was predeceased by his loving wife, Hughena and their daughter Alana, as well as brothers-in-law Junior, Joe, and Hank Whalen, and sisters-in-law Cathy MacIntyre, Velma (Lawrence) Wadden, Ursela (Dave) Hynes, Mary-Lou (Art) Billard, and Neena (Duncan) Fowler.

The family would like to extend our thanks to those nurses and doctors who attended to our father, grandfather, and friend over the course of this year; especially Doctors Dentino, Mahmoud-Ahmed, MacCormick, and Guy; the wonderful nurses and all the volunteers who support the Palliative Care Unit.

There will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday December 6that Holy Cross Parish, Fr. Norman McPhee officiating. The family will arrive at 1pm to welcome guests as they arrive. Reception to immediately follow the service in the church hall.

Donations in Allie’s memory may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com
