I didn’t know Rick well, but I can honestly say he played a huge role in determining the course of my life. He had faith enough in me no only to hire me as a summer student with NSDNR but to allow me to carve my own niche in the position. That job – and the role he played as my supervisor – paved the way for my career and ultimately led me to meet my husband. I’ll remember him as being happy, quick witted, and genuine. My condolences to the family. I wish you peace and acceptance.

Sad to hear about Rick’s passing, Had the great pleasure of working with Rick during my time with the Department of Natural Resources. When I moved to the Kentville office he was a source of information and support that was greatly valued byall. Had the pleasure of travelling to a couple of golfing fundraisers with Rick never had a dull moment, no matter how bad we played. His time came too soon and he will be missed.

Dear Audrey and Family,
My heartfelt condolences to your and your family. Rick was a positive and optimistic person who gave me some great advice and support that has helped me advance my career with DNR. Like Cathy Miler, I am now the second female Area Manager in DNR and Rick supported my career advancement by taking the time to mentor me, providing me with acting opportunities in Kentville and always offered his sage advice and view on things. I still follow some of his advice to this day. Rick had a great work/life balance, he was an all around great role model. I have great memories of Rick, and think about him fondly – he holds a special place in our DNR history.
Most Sincerely,
Sandra Johnston

I got to know Rick when I worked “at the other end of the hall”, where he would escape for breaks. (“Someplace where he wasn’t the boss”.) That eventually evolved into the Friday afternoon tea party, where five or six of us would solve pretty much all of the world’s problems, over hot beverages and treats.
I’ll remember Rick as a great guy. Quirky sense of humour, and that’s a good thing. I think he said “you can’t beat fun for a good time”, and he was always fun.
Condolences to family.

Dear Audrey and family,
I am so sorry to learn of Rick’s death. Your love for each other was so strong and a gift to you both. I know you will miss him so much. Sometimes life seems to be so senseless and this is one of those times. Know you are in our prayers and thoughts. Unfortunately I can not be at the celebration of Ricks life on Tuesday but be assured you are carried in prayer and thought. Sincerely, Ingrid,Rosaire and family especially Joelle.

Audrey, It is with shock and sadness that I am reading about Rick’s death. I had heard that he was ill, but had no idea things were as serious as they obviously were. I can’t imagine how very difficult this must be for you. Seeing you over the years and connecting with you I realize how meeting Rick and falling in love with him has enriched your life in so many ways. Although it brings little comfort, you were lucky to have developed such a strong bond although it was for way too short of a time. I truly wish there was something I could do to help, but I realize there is little one can say or do. May the memories that you have made together help you through the difficult days ahead. Why some people have to endure such awful pain has never made any sense to me. Please know that I am thinking of you.
My very best thoughts are sent to you. Hugs.

My sincere condolences to all of the Harley Family. Rick was a colleague of mine (both Area Supervisors – mine being Halifax East). I was the first female to enter into the Regional Services Branch Management Team in 2005, and Rick was always there to encourage and in many ways mentor me through the years. He was respected by all of his superiors, his peers and his staff.
I can’t imagine how this loss has impacted your family but it is my prayer that Rick’s legacy will give you the strength that you need at this time.
Unfortunately I cannot make it to the celebration on Tuesday of Rick’s life, but I will be thinking of him and trusting that all the families and friends that will gather will give you the strength and support you need at this time.
