Dear Joanne and family, I was deeply saddened when I received the news of your loss. No one can prepare you for such a loss. I have such fond memories of my times with Steve, especially seeing him riding on his motorcycle. There were so many times we had together sharing stories which generally resulted in a great deal of laughter. He will never be forgotten, I feel it was an honour to have known such a great person as Steve. He was admired by many. May the love of family and friends comfort you through this most difficult time.

To Joanne and family,
My heart hangs heavy after hearing the news of Steve’s passing. Though I only knew him through association, the Seymour boys of Birch Cove always spoke very highly of Steve which made me think very highly of him in return.
When I was just a wee lad, Steve took my father Glenn, myself and my brother Darryl on a tour of the ship he was serving on while it was docked in the Halifax Harbour. Steve’s knowledge and personable, welcoming nature are what I remember most. I have never forgotten how special our little, personal tour made me feel. As a young guy, it was one of those character-shaping-memories that got filed under ‘keep’.
In more recent years, my spouse, Karen Lizotte and I were driving back home to Beaver Bank along the Cobequid Bay. We pulled over in Noel to enjoy the sights. Well, it didn’t take long for a friendly stranger to walk up and introduce himself. The three of us continued chatting, trying to find a common interest when I brought up Steve and Joanne, knowing they lived in the surrounding area. Well… wouldn’t you know it, just a mention of Steve’s name put a big smile on this stranger’s face! He continued with, “…around these parts, Steve is known as ‘The Mayor of Gore’!” Why wasn’t I surprised?
…and then there’s today. Reminiscing with my mother, brother Darryl and Karen about Steve. I had to admit to them that there aren’t many people that I’d just… …get a hankering to pick up the phone and check in with. Now, the phone calls were never long or as often as I would have liked… but Steve was one of those people that I’d want to make time for… …to just pick up the phone to say, “Hi! I was just thinkin’ of ya’…” That might be because… to what I saw throughout my life, he always seemed to bring out the best in people, that always seemed so natural for him. No matter who you were, you could be yourself. That says a lot about a man’s character.
I’ll miss our little check-ins… …but I’ll still be thinkin’ of ya’, Steve.

I had the good fortube to sail with Steve on CCGS Hudson. He was a gentleman among men. He always had a kind word, a story to make one laugh and a smile that reached his eyes. On my last trip, before moving to a shore assignment, Steve gave me a card to see me off. He told me to go show them how it’s done by sea-going folk…. Give’r were his exact words. I still have that card and it reminds me there were many good times and great people in that period of my life.
I’ll always think of him as a friend. Hugs to you Joanne and the many family members and people whose lives he touched.

Joanne, I am so sorry for your loss. Steven was always a guy that could make you laugh no matter what the situation, and I looked forward in crossing paths with him just to get a good chuckle. Dad really liked Steven and enjoyed his weekend drives to Kennetcook and spoke highly the company there. Who knows maybe they have met up once again.

It is with wet eyes that I write to express my sorrow to have heard of Joanne’s loss. As a Shipmate to Steve, to learn of the loss of his smiling face and hearty laugh is profound. As one of the privileged and honored to have been one of his “Boys” in the engine rooms of both the John A. and Cornwallis, it is painful. The world has lost not just a Husband and Father or a Shipmate, but a really nice guy.

Sincerest sympathies on Steve’s passing. Steve was an excellent shipmate and friend. We had many laughs sailing on the John A MacDonald and being on the same watch together a few jokes were played…. He would always make you laugh whenever you talked to him. People in CG had great respect for him and his great work ethics. He will be missed by all of his shipmates. Until we meet again on “The High Seas… Fair Winds my Friend”

Steve and I worked together on the John A, the new Edward Cornwallis and were opposite shifts on Hudson.
It’s so sad to see a shipmate who has worked so hard all their lives pass at a time when they should be enjoying the fruits of their labors. My sincerest condolences to the family. Steve was a wonderful shipmate and a friend to so many!

Its never good news to hear of a fellow brother and shipmate passing, it is good that I met Steve on the John “A”, and again on both of the Cornwallis’s, as we both had our careers in the fleet.
Many times we had discussions of bike choice, and steam vessel choice [ Louis S. St-Laurent]
A loss for all who sailed with him, as I extend regrets to the family during this time.

Our deepest sympathy going out to you, Joanne, Melissa Steven and your Families.
Thinking back over the years it was very evident to me that Steve was the one to welcome me into the Family with open arms and a kind heart. For that I will always be greatful.
Since then I cherish the chats we’ve had, cooking experiences shared and his stories about life on the Ships. There is a little salt water running through both of us.
Steve always checked in on Uncle Bud when he was ashore. His calls and visits were always “a good time” and appreciated by us both.
I could write a short story of good memories but all things come to a close. Although Steve is no longer with us his memories will live on in our minds.
RIP Steve, From those that always loved you you will never be forgotten.
