Sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. As many others have pointed out, I also have fond memories of working with Mike at the Maritimes Weather Centre. Whether you were the rookie starting out, or the manager, Mike treated everyone the same – with respect. Sincere condolences to his family.

Well my heart stopped beating for a few seconds when I read this news. He is this type of guy we like a lot! I keep only good memories, back in the 80’s, when I worked with him in Bedford. I was than a young meteorologist. Outside of work, we share dinner parties and I always like his British sense of humour.
Good bye Mike!

In the many comments made about Mike’s contribution to the life of the Weather Office in Bedford, his easy going and co-operative nature stand out with me as a former shift supervisor. Anyone who can make night shift “fun” and contribute some tuneful whistling at the same time is a great asset.
Mike’s cheerful demeanor and his experience with marine meteorology around the world over many years were a great resource for the whole weather office. It was a great experience to have worked with Mike for many years in the Halifax area weather office.
Sincere condolences to his family.

On behalf of the Meteorological Service of Canada I extend my deepest sympathies to Denise and all of Mike’s family. I worked with Mike for 2 years in the early days of my career in the 70’s at the Maritimes Weather Centre. I remember him fondly for his easy-going good nature and his unassuming yet very effective way of guiding and mentoring the younger staff, of whom I was one at the time. Mike served his country and profession honourably and with dignity over his lifetime and his family can be proud of his contribution.
David Grimes,
Assistant Deputy Minister
Meteorological Service of Canada

I first met Mike when we were in the B.Sc. Meteorology program at McGill in the late 60’s. We were then roommates during the Meteorologist training course in Toronto. During the course of our careers in EC I often encountered Mike when I was visiting Halifax, and he always remained a constant. I have never met a more genuine person, or one quicker with a wise crack! He was always the smartest person in the room, and ten times smarter than he ever let on. My sincere condolences to Denise, Michael and the family.

I’m quite confident that I speak for many when I say so sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. One could not find a nicer, friendlier person to work alongside and learn from. My most admirable memory of Mike is his always (repeat always) pleasant demeanor. My fondest memories include: his joyful whistling, his faithful practicing of darts (using a coloured pencil), and his marvelous ability to always solve the entire crossword puzzle! And who didn’t appreciate his practice of showing up 20-30 minutes early (wink, wink), for every shift, day or night? As mentioned by Ken Macdonald, his hands-on chart work was impeccable. Rest in peace Mike and here’s hoping that you meet up with several of your legion buddies for many good games of heavenly darts, followed by a good book to read and enjoy.
Sincere condolences to his family.

I was so sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. We worked together during two periods at the Maritimes Weather Centre in the early part of my career and Mike was always one of the nicest, most good-hearted gentleman one could hope to work with and learn the ropes from. He taught me the value of staying calm when everything seemed to be falling apart and he took great pride in his work. I remember his weather charts being a thing of beauty worthy of framing.
My sincere condolences to Denise, Michael and the granddaughters that I am sure he adored.

My sincere condolences to the family. I started my career as a young meteorologist in Bedford 28 years ago, and Mike was a real gentleman and mentor for all of us new comers. He would have lots of confidence in us and even let us be on the ” prog” desk with him. We laughed a lot while working with him, and saw him practice his dart throwing technique with his pen when he had some free time. It was a privilege knowing and working with him. I only have sweet memories of him. May he rest in peace.
