Obituary of Vernon Bainard Sklapsky

Please share a memory of Vernon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Vernon Bainard Sklapsky, 69, much loved spouse, father, brother and friend, died at his home in St. Margaret’s Bay on May 30, 2017. Born October 26, 1947 to Madeleine (Renner, Richmond, SK) and Bainard Sklapsky (Brock, SK), he grew up on the family farm in Brock Saskatchewan with siblings Joan Crane (Don, Brampton, ON), Liz Little (Saskatoon, SK), Barry (Debbie, Vancouver Island, BC), and Sterling (Ruby Kilfoyle, Martensville, SK). As a boy, Vern was a member of the army cadets where he was awarded multiple accolades for riflery and marksmanship. As a young adult, Vern joined the navy in Halifax where he worked as an electrician aboard the Assiniboine and the Provider. This experience ignited his passion for the water, and he enjoyed many years of sailing around Bedford, the South Shore and the Caribbean aboard his beloved Ketch, Cybele, and his sloop, Wemicus. Vern was a true entrepreneur, creating State Electric and State Homes for which he won the prestigious Best Air Leakage Test Award for building the most energy-efficient home in Nova Scotia (and Canada) in 2004. He enjoyed playing pool with the Metro Pool League, and riding throughout Nova Scotia on his Harley-Davidson softail, Maggie (named after his Mom). Vern lived life by the motto, “Go Big, or Go Home.” He certainly lived life ‘big’, but sadly it was his time to go home. He is survived by spouse Karen Dean (Cape Tormentine, NB), daughter Kimberley Fuller (Karl, Fayetteville Arkansas), and grandchildren Jacob, Edan and Amelia Fuller (also of Arkansas). He is predeceased by his mother and father, and his sister Joan. There will be no funeral service. Vern, we love you and will miss you terribly. May the wind forever fill your sails and may the walrus lead you home.
