Dear Debbie, Elizabeth, Heather, Pam and Terry: I was so saddened to learn of Doreen’s passing. She left an indelible mark on me in my childhood years growing up in Colby Village. I remember her loving, kind, patient, yet firm and committed approach to raising a house full of girls with your Dad.
She was the quintessential homemaker. As a young “outsider looking in”, I remember her strong mothering of all of you (and us friends too) through holidays, birthday parties, sleep overs, cooking delicious food (oh those strawberry pancakes!), and sewing everything from clothes for school, to Halloween costumes to outfits for Jazz Dance performances.
I also remember her strong faith. On the rare occasion that my parents were unable to take me to Mass, my Mom ensured that arrangements were made for me to get there and back with the Carroll’s.
I was constantly amazed at the way your Mom ran a loving but “tight ship”, especially regarding household chores and meal preparation. Everyone had their job to do…like mixing the powdered milk! I’m sure the skills you girls learned early on from her in the kitchen provided a very solid foundation for adulthood and your own families.
Most of all, I remember feeling welcome and comfortable when I was at your house and your Mom (or Dad) were around. Her warmth, and genuine interest in whatever one was doing shone through.
I see from the lovely photo that she maintained that mischievous twinkle in her eye into her senior years. If my family had stayed in NS longer, I might have had the opportunity to witness that twinkle in action from an adult’s perspective. Perhaps some day Debbie, when we see each other again, you can share a few stories with me.
Wishing all of you strength and courage. I know your strong family bonds and numerous treasured memories of your Mom will help sustain you through this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Kelly (Murphy) Galloway
Stratford, PEI
