Obituary of Wendy Elaine MacIntyre
Wendy MacIntyre, 73, of Warne Street, Sydney, passed away November 10th, 2024, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Oak Bay, B.C., Wendy was the daughter of the late Betty and Robert Sutton. Wendy is survived by her children: Leigh (Aleem Mohummed) , Montreal; Kenny (Mireyne Noelli), Sydney; Robert (Kari), MacIntyre, Sydney; Lyn (Dylan) Stuart, Westmount; her sisters, Lee (Bob) Dennstedt, Lyn (Chuck) Dunn and brothers, Kenneth and Harold Sutton, all of Victoria, B.C.; grandchildren: Lachlan, Oliver, Jesse, and Archie Stuart; Jacob and Scarlett MacIntyre; her father-in-law, Lorne MacIntyre; brother-in-law, Jerry MacIntyre, and sister-in-law Kathy MacIntyre. Wendy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Danny MacIntyre, in 2015.
After graduating from nursing school in B.C., over 50 years ago, Wendy travelled to Cape Breton Island and its beauty compelled her to make it her home. She and her husband, Danny, lived in many locales across the island including Leitches Creek, Loch Lomond, Whitney Pier, Birch Plain, and Sydney. Even more than the landscape, however, Wendy loved the Cape Bretoners who became her extended family and who fully reciprocated that affection.
Wendy's nursing career spanned nearly as many years and she held positions at St. Elizabeth's, St. Rita's, and Buchanan Memorial Hospitals. Wendy also worked at Sydney Family Practice with Dr. Jean Crosby, where her soothing disposition and medical acumen made her an exceptional and compassionate health care professional.
Wendy was an enthusiastic gardener, an accomplished cook, an avid bridge player, a devoted wife, and the proudest of mothers. But it was this, her maternal side, that possibly defines Wendy best. She had an enduring interest in the wellbeing of others. Not enough can be said about the care and nurturing Wendy provided to her family and friends and their friends, in ever increasing circles, over the decades. Countless people were the recipients of her empathy and kindness, whether it was home-made soup with fresh baked bread, a sympathetic ear, or solid and insightful advice. Her favourite person was invariably the one with a problem, and she would do her utmost to provide exactly the help that person needed. Wendy continued the MacIntyre tradition of an open house, and no one "knocked" at Wendy's door before entering because a welcome was always assured.
Wendy's thoughtfulness and consideration manifested in her fully present listening like you were the only one in the world, the bottomless pot of tea, the table that magically always had room for one more, her heartfelt and carefully chosen gifts, showing her grandchildren the wonders of patient baking and making, and a home overflowing with fun, games, belly laughter and joy for all ages and backgrounds. It was human connection, not materialism, that gave meaning to her days.
A person of great tolerance and patience, Wendy leaves behind a world that shines brighter for her presence. She thoughtfully imparted countless lessons of generosity and positivity to all fortunate enough to know her. We are all so lucky to have witnessed life as she saw it—one filled with endless warmth, wonder, kindness, and grace.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the wonderful care of our Mom, the friendships forged, the laughter and unconditional compassion during a difficult time. A very special thanks to Wendy's friends, Lynn Peters and Ruby Wilson, for their selfless support not only during illness but through their friendship that spanned decades, and for the boundless kindnesses shown by her friends and family near and far.
