Ruby Headley McCormick
Glace Bay
With heavy hearts and tremendous sadness, we announce the passing of our loving, beautiful mother after a courageous 11-year battle with cancer and renal dialysis.
Ruby Headley McCormick, age 76, of Glace Bay passed away August 17, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Dorothy Icy Brewster (Josh) and the late Lawrence Richard Headley (Geraldine).
In mom’s younger years she lived and worked in Ontario as a candy striper at a nursing home, a laborer in a toy factory along with other various jobs throughout the years. She developed a love of baseball with her dad taking in many Toronto Blue Jays games along with spending quality time with her sister, Donna (Randy). Mom’s love of the sport continued with her supporting her children and grandchildren taking in all games possible. She was sure to be heard around the fields.
Mom enjoyed a competitive game of darts as she was in many leagues around the community. Mom touched and bonded greatly with many young and old over a fun and challenging game of Tarbish or Rumy500 as she barely lost a game, but if she did you would surely get the Ole Ruby Tuesday Stink Eye.
Other hobbies she enjoyed were crossword puzzles and playing board games with her 11 beautiful grandchildren.
Mom was the strongest, toughest, most courageous lady that we have ever known. Even though mom was battling her many illnesses, she was always ready to go to a party, dance, and family function. Mom was the first to arrive at an event and was the last to leave no matter how she was feeling that day.
Mom would always look forward to a daily phone call or outing with her Secret Keeper, Mary Jane and a visit with her side kick, great friend Murphy.
She is survived by her sons, Richard (Wanda), John (Tanya); daughters Doreen (Michael), Sonya (Pat) Blanche (Allan). Grandchildren, Richard (Erin), Felicia (Emma), Cheyenne (Isabelle), Tatyana (Mason), Bryson, Kiki (Keegan), Lanaya (Ethan), JR, Connor, Josh, Carter. Brothers, Richie, Kevin (Blanche), Donald (Jackie), Benji; sisters, Donna (Randy), Deanie (Rob), Mary (Eric), Veronica.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, John Garfield 'Sonny Bud' McCormick; brothers, Little Josh and Calvin; sisters, Donna Ashe, Winnie (Luke) Lucas, Debbie Headley Laplante, Carolanne and Lorraine and her best friend Jenny Munden.
We, the family, would like to thank the cancer clinic, renal dialysis clinic, Dr. Guy, New Waterford Homecare, Golden Girls Homecare, Bliss Homecare, EHS, VON and all other nurses, doctors and specialists that helped treat mom over the years. An extra thank you to Billy Gilliam and Allison Andrews for their care and compassion shown to our mom over the years.
We the siblings would like to extend our gratitude to our sister Doreen and brother-in-law Michael for the care given to our mother over all these years. There was nothing mom wanted or needed because of you both.
In memory of Ruby, donations may be made to the cancer centre and the renal dialysis unit.
