Al MacDermid
Glace Bay
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Allison 'Al' MacDermid, 82, of Glace Bay.
Al was born on January 8, 1942 to Edward and Katherine (Morrison) MacDermid in Sydney. He grew up in Westmount before moving to Glace Bay in 1967.
The Glace Bay Town Hall is where Al worked for 30 years, retiring as the Town Clerk in 1995. Al loved working with numbers and did income tax returns for over 50 years. Community was very important in his life, serving on various community organization boards.
Al found good in just about everyone and enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved music, spending time with friends, attending theatre and concerts, and engaging in conversation with everyone he met. He had a mischievous sense of humor that was passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Al was an avid sports fan and especially loved rooting for the Bruins, Red Sox and CBU Basketball teams. Back in his younger years he was quite the athlete. He enjoyed participating in many sports, including bowling, basketball, darts at the “Hut” and was known for his softball pitching.
Al is survived by the love of his life Jane (Fiander) after 57 years of marriage. He will be dearly missed by his 3 children Glen, Karen Rowe (Donnie), and Janet Mazza (Marcus) as well as his grandchildren Matthew, Kaileigh, Lucas and Olivia. He will also be missed by his dear sisters Mary and Anne and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Gordon and brother-in-law Doug.
Our world got a bit dimmer this week, but I am sure wherever he is he has found someone to tell stories with and enjoy a moment.
Services will be held at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. (902-849-4199).
