With broken hearts, we the family of John “Lou” Llewellyn Whalen, 82, of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia announce his sudden passing on June 25, 2024, at home. Born in Glace Bay, Lou was the son of the late Sarah (nee Waye) and James Whalen.
Survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Patricia (Patsy) Whalen (nee Banville); sons John (Janet) Whalen, and Leon (Nancy) Whalen; brother Ronald “Rannie” (Marilyn) Whalen; sisters-in-law Terry (Charlie) Harte and Ruth Whalen; brother-in-law Ernie Jackson. A much-loved Poppy to his grandchildren: Rebekah (Shane) Huntrods, Leon (Laurence) Whalen, Cameron Whalen and Ryan Whalen; and great grandchildren Clara and Oliver Huntrods, and Juliette Whalen.

Lou wore many hats during his work life, including at: Sobeys, The Heavy Water Plant, and #26 Colliery. Always an Entrepreneur he, along with his wife Patsy, first had J&L Dairy and then their great accomplishment, Marble Waye. He finished his formal working days as a custodian with the Cape Breton-Victoria District School Board.
Lou held a special place in the hearts of his family and community. He was always generous with his time and a helping hand. And always willing to share his lived experience and wisdom with anyone – sometimes even with those who needed it. We all enjoyed his many stories, coloured by his special command of the English language.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 1-2p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life from 2pm-2:30 p.m. in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. A private interment will be held at a later date.
