Was surprised and shocked to hear the sad news about Don.
We long shared an apartment in Saint John along with broadcaster Bill Seguin back in the mid ‘60s.
Don, the Canadian Press representative; Seguin and I compared stories of our news gathering experiences. Often, we were in competition to be first on a story. As old school journalists, we worked hard and we played hard.
As time went on, we were all chasing stories in Toronto. Don, precise and calm under deadline pressure, found himself editing copy on a major news desk at CP. I worked mostly in the CP News Features department. Bill travelled about the city in company vehicles reporting spot news to radio stations. Don was always the sensible one.
Don, who could manage money, frequently made short-term loans to less prudent colleagues. He was there to help transient reporters move from apartment to apartment. In pre-Watergate days, when newsmen were often pictured as ruffians in tattered trench-coats, Don was always polite, charming and presentable.
Over time, Don was transferred out west with The Canadian Press and we lost touch. But over all these years, I’ve often had fond memories of Don, a talented wordsmith and all-around great guy. I extend my deepest sympathies to Anita, Jennifer and family.
Sincerely, John Cunningham
