Obituary of Douglas Francis Thomas

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Douglas Francis Thomas, 71, of Sydney, at his home, with his loving family by his side. Born in Glace Bay, Douglas was the son of the late Vincent and Gertrude Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Doreen (Carey) Thomas; son, Scott Thomas; daughters, Janet (Graham) Chenhall, Sharon (Todd) Campbell and Glenda (Gary) Thomas; brothers, Wayne Thomas, Calvin Thomas, Darell Thomas and sister, Velma Burke. Douglas was a loving grandfather to his eight grandchildren; Caitlyn, Nick , Hunter, Alex ,Shawn, Dylan, Matthew, Evan and his great-granddaughter, Lillian. Douglas had a special relationship with “the Carey Clan”. Besides his parents, Douglas was predeceased by brothers, Gerald Thomas and Sheldon Thomas; sister, Marlene Campbell; in-laws, James and Alice (Bunny) Carey, Mary Courtney and Kathleen Thorne. Dougie grew up in Long Beach, Port Morien where he loved the ocean air and the spray of the salty waves. In his youth he played hockey for Donkin High School, and in his adulthood was an avid dart player. Dougie worked in the finishing mill at the Sydney Steel Plant in the 70’s and 80’s, and ended his working years lobster fishing in the place he loved, Port Morien. Dougie volunteered many years with the Birch Grove Fire Department as Chief, and President of the Birch Grove Recreation Centre. He was a past member of Tower Road Fire Hall, and was one of his last outings before his passing. Dougie loved to cook and entertain family & friends; no-one left hungry after visiting the Thomas house. His world was his four children and wife of 51 years. He always looked forward to visits from his grandchildren who he told many stories to. To this day we are still uncertain of their validity. Dougie had a very special bond with his great granddaughter who always put a smile on his face. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902-539-7175. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Sunday, August 6, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral service to take place in the Chapel on Monday, August 7 at 2 pm with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. A celebration of life will take place at Tower Road Fire Hall following the service.
