Gordon “Gordie” MacKay
Halifax
With heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of Gordon MacKay, at his home in Halifax. Born in Glace Bay, December 2, 1938, he was the son of the late Jennie and Torrey MacKay.
Gordie grew up on Reserve Street, and lived across the street from his grandparents, D.H. and Catherine MacKay. When Gordie was in his 20’s he went to visit his sister Joan in Halifax, and while there he applied for a job at the V. G. and was hired on the spot starting the next day as an orderly, he was employed there for over 30 years, until his retirement.
Gordie enjoyed travelling to Nashville, to hear his favourite country and western singers. He also enjoyed travelling to the Calgary Stampede, Disneyworld and London, Ontario to visit with Joan.
His favourite hockey team was the Montreal Canadiens, and he was an avid fan of the Halifax Mooseheads, having seasons tickets every year. Gordie enjoyed walking around Halifax, going to the library, to the gardens on Spring Garden Road and the waterfront when activities were going on.
Gordie is survived by his sister, Joan Rodden, nephews Kevin and Glenn of London, Ont., sister-in-law, Linda MacKay, Donkin, NS.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Eric.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. NS (902-849-4199).
