Obituary of Paul Douglas Wentzell
Please share a memory of Paul to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that Paul’s family announces his unexpected passing at the age of 66 from a heart attack on Friday November 25, 2022, at his Chester Basin home. Paul was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and completed his school years in Bridgewater before moving on to a 20-year career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His entire career with the RCMP was spent in Manitoba, aside from a few months when he trained for the Musical Ride in Ottawa. With Nova Scotia in his heart, Paul returned home every year for vacation and finally retired from the RCMP (May 1997) to Nova Scotia. Paul proudly received the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Canada in 2012 for his exemplary service with the RCMP, presented at the Bridgewater Legion, of which he was an active member (just like Mom and Dad). Paul never tired of wearing his Red Serge with pride. Paul found a second career as a school bus driver, which brought him great joy and many stories. Following his retirement in June 2020, Paul spent his time caring for his home, gardening, swimming (colder the better), and spending time with family and friends. Paul excelled at and loved many sports – both as a spectator and player. His participation in bowling, hockey, crib, and dart tournaments resulted in the acquisition of medals, trophies, and brought much satisfaction. Paul made many friends through sports, policing, and bus driving and maintained these relationships through late night phone calls and emails. As friends and family knew, Paul loved cooking, combining weird combinations that generally, but not always, tasted good; he was not fussy about what he wore resulting in quite a unique clothing style; he loved all holidays and family get togethers, especially birthdays; he was a dedicated Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jays fan, inherited from his Mom and shared with his oldest sister, Linda; Paul enjoyed his "Crown", his smokes and his BBQ; but most of all Paul was devoted to his family.
His memory will be cherished by his surviving sisters, Linda (Gary) Barton and Diane Roper Sutherland (Chris Panagos); niece, Sheena Barton (Adam Carney); niece, Jen (Mike) Haverstock; nephew, Jeff Roper (Stephanie Bouthat) and his much-loved great nephew, Thomas, who knew him as GUP; his Aunt, Helen (late Doug) Kaulbach; many beloved cousins; as well as the friends and families whose lives he touched.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, Chester and June (Kaulbach) Wentzell; and his older brother, David.
