I was so shocked this evening (March 5th) to discover in a post online that Mary had passed away in October. Oddly enough, Mary popped into my mind earlier this week and I wondered how she was doing and if she was still living in Cape Breton. I was only acquainted with Mary, having met her in 2000, but was lucky enough to get to know her a little over the course of that year and to enjoy a trip with her and others to Los Angeles in June of 2001 where we were roommates for the week. I had greatly admired a painting called Spring in the Getty Museum and Mary and Sue Newhook surprised me with a copy of a book on the painting from the gift shop. They had both inscribed the book and it has been sitting on my coffee table ever since. It is one of my favourite things. Mary left such an impression on me from the first time I met her. She was so kind and warm and one of the loveliest people I have ever met. I so enjoyed running into her now and then before she moved to Cape Breton. She was an absolute delight to talk to. My sincere condolences to her husband and all her loved ones who I know will miss her tremendously.

Even though Mary and I met only a handful of times over the years, through our mutual cousins, she was such an easy person to get to know, so warm and open, with that wonderful smile that would light up a room. And what an accomplished woman she was. I very much enjoyed reading her book, "The Fairies in Cape Breton" earlier this year. My heartfelt sympathy to Dave and family, and to Mary's brothers and their families.

Mary was a passionate, compassionate, hard working producer who never compromised her integrity or respect for everyone she worked with. Nova Scotia has lost one of it’s great story tellers. Think about the many, many hours of programming she produced and number of lives she clearly touched. I can also say, with 100% certainty, that Mary had the most elegant and fashionable foot wear in the 50 year history of Land and Sea. In barns, on beaches and boats, riverbeds, fields and forests you could be sure she always wore the best heels for the day.
To Dave and family, I am terribly saddened by this news and send my sincere condolences.

I first remember meeting Mary in Toronto, in the early nineties, before she moved out East, to work for Midday. We had lunch and she was so excited, and looking forward to her next chapter, with so many questions about life and work in Halifax.
And how fortunate she was in Nova Scotia, to carve out such a successful, and award-winning career,
to build such a wide and wonderful circle of friends and, finally, meet Dave, the husband, who she called... "my rock."
What a beautiful life she led. I feel grateful to have known her and to call her my friend. Sending my deepest condolences to Dave, and Jim, and the rest of the family. Cathy Robinson

Mary and I met when I moved to St Lambert and we were 10 years old. We shared a wonderful friendship through our teen years with crushes on boys, CGIT camp, and youth group, even sneaking a first cigarette!
My favourite memory is love of the Beatles! She liked Paul and I liked George. We were lucky enough to see them in person at the Montreal forum and screamed away like the rest of the crowd!
We always stayed in touch and our last chat was about how much I enjoyed her book about the fairies.
My sincere condolences to you . She was truly a gift to know…. You are in my prayers

With others, I am deeply saddened by Mary's too-early death. I was fortunate to know her for some years in our book club in Cape Breton, where we shared so much laughter, ideas, food and wine. She was a woman of so many talents and such curiosity and warmth. She will live on in so many good memories. Mary and Dave shared so much love together and I know her passing will be so painful for him and the loving support of his family will be so important to getting through the dark days of such a profound loss. With sincere condolences, Jacke Scott
