Flemming, Gwendolyn Dorothy (Aunt Gwen), age 101 of Halifax, passed away peacefully at Drummond Hall on December 23, 2018. The daughter of the late John L. Flemming and Aileen Mullane, she was born in Halifax on October 3, 1917. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was predeceased by sisters Eileen, Josephine and Florence and by brothers Gerard, Wilfred, Bruce, John, Patrick and Frank. Gwen was employed for many years as a stenographer in the Clerk’s Office of the City of Halifax and was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion. She was a pillar of support to her family over the years, caring for her mother and sister Josephine during prolonged illnesses. She is best remembered by three generations of nieces and nephews and their families, for her keen interest and enthusiasm in all aspects of life, including her beloved Toronto Blue Jays. A devoted family member, she never hesitated in offering advice, wise counsel and encouragement, including advising against a career in politics. Her optimism and faith in God epitomized her life. Her extended family will miss her daily prayers for them. Her legacy as a caring, loving and generous person is an inspiration to all who knew her. Gwen’s family wishes to thank her long-time caregivers, Ethel Grier, Cecilia Fry and the staff of Drummond Hall for their kindness and support for Aunt Gwen. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation Hospice Halifax or to any organization which cares for those in need and when you show love and generosity to someone, think of her. Funeral arrangements have taken place under the care of TJ Tracey Cremation & Burial Specialists, Bedford (902-835-4212). There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax on Thursday, January 10, 2018 at 10:30 AM, with reception to follow in the church hall.
