I was so sorry to hear about Ross’s passing. Ross was such a great person and will be missed by everyone he touched.
I first met Ross a few years ago when he was researching the genealogy of the Lebanese community and he had contacted our family. When we saw Ross, we quickly discovered that he knew more about our family, the Gosines, than we did. We learned so much and I couldn’t wait for others in our family tree to meet with him.
I loved to talk to Ross about the history and the families of all the Lebanese in Nova Scotia and abroad. I always looked forward to speaking to Ross when we returned home for a visit from Vancouver.
Ross you will always be remembered for your selfless giving. The Lebanese community is a closer and better community as a result of all your work, research and efforts. The world is a better place because of your life and your amazing deeds.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I sincerely wish Jemma and Kemp our condolences. They have been truly blessed by your life and I know you will continue to watch over them.
May you Rest In Peace beautiful Ross.

Here it is August 5, 2018, and I’m just learning that Ross passed away. I am devastated. Jemma and Kemp, please know that my greatest sympathy is extended to you. I am so, so sorry.
Ross was such a scholar in genealogy and so willing to share his wealth of knowledge with me and others. I was introduced to Ross via email by a relative of mine who was a friend of Ross. Ross generously and eagerly shared tons and tons of family history with me. He knew more about my family than I did. He even identified and explained a relic holy card for me which I had inherited from an aunt.
In the summer of 2015 Ross and his cousin Chris drove from New Hampshire where Ross, Jemma, and Kemp were vacationing, to Barre, Vermont to meet with me and a cousin of mine. We viewed and photographed many gravestones of Lebanese people at the Hope Cemetery. If one can have “fun” visiting a cemetery, I guess you could say we had fun. It was a great learning experience.
On August 26, 2016, he presented a power point genealogy study in my living room (South Burlington, Vermont, USA) on the Lebanese community in Vermont. Everyone attending was very impressed. Kemp was the electronic “engineer” setting up the power point to project on one of my walls. Jemma and I talked about Lebanese food and recipes. Again, she knew a lot more than I did although I am much older.
Then, last year in September, Ross emailed me saying he was finishing up his chemo treatments and had gained back the weight he had lost and that the prognosis was good. I had not heard from him since, but I hoped it was just because he was busy researching, working, etc. Again, I am so sorry to discover this sad, sad news.

Learned today, Sunday July 22, 2018, the anniversary of my own beloved Father’s passing in + 1982, now at rest in The LORD in the Grand River Cemetery, Cape Breton, of dear Ross’ passing. We were to meet up this past spring to look over family papers and share time that had lapsed for some years.
Heartfelt prayers for Jemma and Kemp, and for all the Family on this profound loss to your family circle:
Ross was a true Christian gentleman, devoted Husband and Father, and faithful Son and Son-in-law.
Our larger family circle owes him an abiding debt of gratitude for his diligent labours for many years in collecting and collating the Grand River and surrounding communities genealogical history.
May The Peace of our Risen LORD Jesus Christ comfort all who mourn. + I Corinthians ch. 15. Amen.

I am so saddened to hear of Ross’s passing. He was a good friend and mentor to me in understanding the historical and current network of Nova Scotia’s Lebanese and our immigration stories across the province including my own family. The province owes him a debt of gratitude for all his work and dedication, especially those of us of Lebanese origin. Jemma and Kemp, my family keeps you both in thought and prayer. I am so sorry to hear of Ross’ passing. We had drifted apart since our common involvement with family tree research in the mid 80s but I ran into him one evening a few years ago when I was at the former BJH for my daughter’s volleyball team practices. Ross spoke of the changes in his life in the 30+ years that passed. I wish I had taken time to sit longer with him as he spoke so kindly of the people in his life, his family and the times that we shared in common from times past. He was a kind and gentle man. I will remember him and think how lucky his family was to have him close to them.

I am sadden to hear of Ross’s passing. I met Ross at the Nova Scotia Archives (formerly PANS) when I worked there and when I was home on holidays from Ontario. I remember the last time I saw Ross, I think it was when Karen McKay had picked me up at the airport and afterwards we stopped in as it Kemp’s birthday and she had a present for him. Jemma and Kemp we are deeply saddened by Ross’ passing.
It came as a shock to me personally as I had just run into Ross and Kemp 6 weeks ago. Ross looked great and was in excellent spirits. He was an amazing man who took what life would offer, and always with a smile. Ross was devoted to genealogy and our family was amazed at the information that he was able to gather for our family tree.
The family will miss him, he was taken away from us all way to soon.
We send our love to both of you at this difficult time.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. Ross and I grew up together in the same general area of Richmond County but- being a few years older than him- our paths didn’t cross much in Cape Breton. In recent years I had the great pleasure of getting to know him better at my workplace. Ross would come in to my school from time to time and it was just like ‘old home week’. We’d have wonderful chats about the people ‘down home’ and often as not, the subject of our conversations would drift towards genealogy. Ross had a passion for the history of his people and for ancestry in general. I was always impressed by the depth of his knowledge and his eagerness to share what he knew with others. Ross was a kind and gentle man and a throwback to a time when civility was the norm rather than the exception. May he rest in peace and may you, his family, find solace in the memories you have.

I am so sad that Ross has passed so soon … and am very sorry that I was never able to meet Jemma and Kemp. We are very grateful for the research Ross did 25 years ago on the Redmond family – it got me interested in my family history, and eventually to write a book on the Ash and Redmond families for my cousins and kids. I always wanted to visit Nova Scotia, but procrastinated too long, though cousin Lynda Moses allowed me to share vicariously her visit with Ross and our Grand Falls and Sydney cousins last year.

I had not known Ross for long, we met over messenger last year when he contacted me because he had taken a DNA test through ancestry.ca and discovered that we were related. We had many conversations over messenger and phone, shared stories and family pictures. I soon discovered that Ross knew more about my family than I did. I enjoyed our conversations and I think Ross did also.
Sometime in the 1980’s, Ross had taken a copy of his Family Tree and given it to my mother, Pauline Anne Kemp, Waterman and not knowing what to do with it, she mailed it to me in BC. She could not remember the name of the person who gave it to her though. I asked Ross if he had given a copy of the family tree to my mother and he said he had. I will miss not having these talks with Ross. He was a very caring person. He will be missed.

Sad news. I did not know Ross personally but reached out to him a few years ago for geneology information on my Morrison family prior to a trip to Scotland. His information was a great help in my travelling to places where our family originated and for this I am truly blessed by our connection.
Ross’s Mom, Frances holds a soft spot in my heart as she spent time living with our family while she went to high school in St Peters, Cape Breton. My parents loved her dearly and always connected on visits to St Peters. Kemp, I think you might even be named after my Dad, Kemp Morrison. If not I am sure your name has some connection to our family Kemp name. My grandmother was a Kemp.

Ross was a dear friend of mine. I met him in March of 1999 and we became good friends ever since. Ross would do anything for anyone, regardless of the time of day or the circumstances. Ross was the type of person you could strike up any conversation on an unlimited amount of topics, Ross would state his opinion but never judge yours. His love of genealogy, history, politics, and labour issues is only surpassed by his love for his wife Jemma, his son Kemp, and his close circle of friends, and of course the family dog Rouge. Battling cancer was a huge challenge, Ross fought it with dignity, courage, and fearlessness, he never gave up right until the end. I will always remember him for his smile, his laugh, and his openness. To describe Ross in one saying: If Ross won the lottery he would not be a millionaire, he would share his new found winnings with those who need it and he would go back to work the next day.
