It was sad to hear of Wally’s passing. A full house at Jenny’s Pub to pay their final respects to Wally showed just how much people cared for him. Wally was a good teammate in fastball and baseball. He swung the bat hard at the ball every time. Wally was also great at sports trivia – not just in his favourite sports, but any sport you could mention. Rest in Peace Wally. You will be missed.

Sorry for your loss. Our families go back to Wally and Sue living next door to us on Livingstone Street with Nanny Whalen. Back in those days everybody sat out front till all hours and boys played catch in the street. Sure was a great turnout for him at Jenny’s shows how much he was liked and loved his sports . Life won’t be the same with him gone

The Waldog played a lot of ball with his friends from Truro. Memories too many to remember, but were classic. His 3 home run game in Shediac when we all really wanted to go home was one in particular. I will miss seeing him in and around ball fields near and far. When I first met him , I was umpiring senior fastball and he was a pepperpot. Rest easy , kid and trot home because you cleared the bases. Class.

I first met Wally when I was 14 years of age, ( 58 years ago) and we have been friends ever since. I didn’t play ball when I met him but he taught me how to, I was never as good as him but was better because of him. Wally’s house was the meeting place when we were teenagers. We would gather there and then go off to play ball, go to the party, dance or school. I remember one day outside Wally’s when some of the guys were going to skip school, I said no I’m going. Wally said just a minute, went in the house and came out with a long piece of rope. They tied me to a tree until it was too late to go to school, an unexpected vacation day.
Thanks Wally for these fond memories and more, too many to mention.

Hello Kim, Kerry and Jo-Ann. Barb and I are so very sorry to hear of Wally’s passing. We have very fond memories of being neighbors on Robie St. and our family truly enjoyed sharing the backyards with your family. (many many good times). Waldog will surely be missed. Wally you did not teach me to play ball but you showed me and a lot of others how to win. You were the glue and playing alongside of you was much easier then playing against you. Thinking of you, Barb and Brian

I also last saw Wally at Jenny’s (without the beard). Mostly, I remember Wally from his days playing ball at the commons. I will have my sister Linda and Jimmy have a toast at Jenny’s on my behalf. RIP Wally, you will be missed.

I was recruited by Wally to come to Halifax from Dartmouth to play in the new Intermediate A league in 1978. It was one of the highlights of my fastball career.
Wally was the glue of that Maple Leaf Lodge team and made me and the other guys from Dartmouth feel right at home with his Halifax recruits.
Wally was a friend to all who showed up to play or watch a game on Diamond One of the Halifax Commons that summer of 1978.
I am currently visiting my son and his family in Edmonton so tomorrow morning my grandson,Madden(3) and I are going to have a catch in memory of Wally.

To the family of Wally McCarthy
I met Wally back in 1979 when he was hosting a sports trivia contest at the Lions Head tavern in Halifax. I was a 19 year old Dalhousie student that had a life-long passion for sports trivia and decided to enter the contest. I won first prize that year and the following year. I did not enter the contest the 3rd year and Wally asked me to be one of the moderators, which I gladly accepted. I do not know what compensation Wally received for running the contests, but I am sure it did not come close to equalling the effort he put in to making them such a success.
I reside in Port Hawkesbury, but if I lived closer to HRM I would definitely attend the celebration of life on Wednesday. Although I have not seen Wally in many years I think of him from time to time, especially when I am involved with a trivia contest. My sincere condolences to his family, and as requested in the obituary, I will raise a glass in honour of Wally.

Good morning;
Shocked and sadden by the passing of Wally. I coached Wally when he played midget baseball in 1962. I transferred with the CNR to Montreal headquarters in 1965. That June I received a phone call from one of the many departments in the building informing me that a young person from Halifax was trying to make contact with me. I confirmed I did know Wally and he was put on the phone.
He told me that he and a friend had thrown their books in a garbage bin on the way to school and had hitch hiked to Montreal. They needed something to eat and a place to stay.
I told Wallly to wait in the CNR station and I would meet him and take him home with me. He stayed a few days with me. During that time I found out the RCMP were looking for them.
I convinced his friend to call his parents and put him on the train back to Halifax.
Wally said he wanted to go on to Hamilton to see his father. I put him on the train to Hamilton.
Wally and I have seen each other many times over the years and I always felt I had a special bond with him. He certainly knew I was a friend as I always considered him someone special in my life.
I last saw him just before Christmas at Jenny’s with his full beard. We joked about his beard and went our
separate ways. He will be missed.
