Dear Beth and family. As a fellow 2000 grad from AST, I reach out to you after all these years to extend my heartfelt condolences. Your dad sounded like such a unique and thoroughly enjoyable soul. I lost my own dad only two years after ordination yet still miss him dearly. In this time of transition and challenge, treasure the memories and hold close to those who are dear to you. Most sincerely, (Rev. )Laurie MacCuish

I have memories of Walter at UCC meetings and recognized his wonderful dedication to Christ and faithful service. I think I last saw him when I drove him to the closing meeting of Halifax Presbytery in Musquodoboit Harbour on a rainy windy evening. We made it home to Halifax safely. Now he is at home in the Mystery of Life and Love whom we call God. My sincere condolences to his children who have a great sense of humour. May you find comfort in your memories of your unique Dad.

I met Walter when I was a student minister at Brunswick Street United Church. He was an individual and always had an interesting take on scripture or world affairs. My prayers are with his family.

On behalf of the Board of the Brunswick Street Mission, let me offer condolences on your family's loss. I joined the Board a few years ago and knew Walter briefly. His contributions were always thoughtful and of good intent. I had the pleasure of chatting with Walter a number of times between Board meetings. Stories, YES. As someone else has observed, often 'regaling' , YES. The tone of his obituary is apt and brings a knowing smile.

I feel it is an excellent example of Walter "going deep" in conversation.

Dear Family. I regret that I will be unable to attend the Celebration of Walter's life and talk with you in person next Tuesday. This online tribute is to convey my condolences and to let you know how much I enjoyed discussing a broad range of topics with Walter. We met just a few years ago when, although from different churches, we served together on Halifax Presbytery and on the Board of Brunswick Street Mission. I got to know him at meetings & activities and when driving to and from them. Walter's ideas were always interesting and often thought provoking.
My sincere sympathy for your loss, Geoff Lewis.

My family and I are very sorry for your loss Scott, Ian and Beth. I have fond memories of your Dad regaling us neighbourhood kids of stories about your camping and scouting adventures. His train set was mesmerizing and I was always in awe of the vehicles he drove. He seemed very sophisticated and worldly to my young impressionable mind. I won’t cry because it’s over, I will smile because it happened.
Love and support,
Abhi Samant and family

Mysticism is the awe with which we respond to existence and creation when we learn not to take it for granted.” Matthew Fox
“What makes you happy or unhappy is not the world and the people around you, but the thinking in your head. As well” Anthony de Mello, The Way to Love
I first met Walter when I began to volunteer at the Brunswick Street Mission. I offered a Bible study on Thursday afternoons. Walter and I shared a coffee that afternoon after each session and we continued this practice, on and off, for 15 more years. In 2010 Walter was part of the committee that asked me to serve Brunswick Street United Church on Sunday nights but disappointed I turned the sermon time over to the shared experience of the 12-15 people in the circle. Walter always preferred a 20-minute sermon. Still, for someone who claimed he didn’t like the format, he spoke as much as anyone during the sermon time. Walter could be profound. He loved to quote Matthew Fox’s Cosmic Christ or Anthony de Mello. Many in our circle struggle with loneliness. Walter would pull de Mello’s book out of his canvas bag and read passages about coming to terms with being alone, learning to enjoy one’s own company. Many afternoons I would find Walter sitting on a park bench in the Public Gardens. Walter would rent beautiful art works from the local gallery and hang them in his apartment for a month at a time.
Walter was a proud member of the United Church of Canada. He credits his trips to the Atlantic Christian Training Centre for his theological education. One lecturer, John Stewart, had a profound effect on Walter. In 1988, when the local CBC invited pro and con representatives of the UCC to debate ordaining gay and lesbian clergy Walter was chosen to represent the pro side. And of all the UCC institutions none meant more to Walter than the Brunswick Street Mission. He was a Board member for many years. Walter told me he had never missed one of the Mission Breakfasts, he could recite large portions from each of the guest speakers’ presentations.
One night, when we were discussing how we found our faith Walter told us about an experience on a farm. He was a young boy watching a baby calf being born. The farmer invited Walter to assist. “Never again did I doubt the existence of God. God was in that moment, in creation, in that miracle of life.”
Brunswick United Church misses Walter and we keep his family in our prayers.

I remember meeting Walter and Mary and Beth, when I first attended .Cole Harbour United Church. I was new to NS, and they chatted with us at coffee time. It helped to make us feel welcome. We also hosted a Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and Walter and Mary were guests! Such a long time ago, but fond memories. Our sympathy to the family.
