A life well lived. That’s how I reflect on Roddie. The picture taken in his favourite chair in the house, with his big smile on, is how I have known Roddie for over 50 years…. I cannot recall him ever not smiling! Mind you I moved away from Glace Bay and no doubt missed all his other expressions, but this is how Roddie always was whenever I saw him, and likely how most everyone would remember him.
I was 14 when that smile first greeted me as a confused teenager, looking for some semblance of normal. I found it in the hearts of Roddie and Irene, who fast became like my second parents, and stayed so over the years. They were always the first on my list to visit when returning home over the years.
Roddie was full of fun and teasing and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. He was always there to listen and to support, even for just moments in passing as he was busy working looking after his customers and business.
Hacking my way across a few golf courses with Roddie in Florida, Sydney and in Glace Bay, he was patient and teased just enough to get me playing better. I never could outshoot him though, and so it was between us.
A life well lived, yes…. a success in every way…with everything he did, and most known for how he was with everyone in his life…kind, generous, thoughtful, and for some of us lucky ones, a great teaser!
Irene, you were loved by one of the best. He is missed, but will always be with us in so many memories that will carry us through.
