It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerard Gouthro, age 84, on Sunday February 14, 2021 at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Agnes (Murphy) Gouthro.
Gerard was a member of the Reserve Mines Pensioners Club and the Glace Bay Seniors Club. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the various clubs in Glace Bay, Reserve Mines, Gardiner Mines and Dominion; he enjoyed watching his beloved Toronto Blue Jays and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gerard worked with many businesses over the years; Marshall’s Men’s Wear, Brinks Security, Heavy Water Plant, and the Cape Breton Development Corporation.
Gerard is survived by his two sons; Gerard (Shirley), Greg (Michelle); daughter, Yvonne (John Maxner); two sisters, Julia (Jack) MacAulay and Colleen MacAulay; brother and sisters-in-law, Xavier (Patricia) MacGillivary, Eymard Lambert and Arlene (Barry) Martin.
He is also survived by his seven grandchildren; Jeff, Brad, Darrell, Jennifer, Mark, Alicia, and David; 13 great-grandchildren; Aurora, Katie, Ethan, Emma, Emily, Erin, Clarke, Lila, Bella, Cloe, Zoey, Avery and Maximus; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gerard was predeceased by his wife Mary (MacGillivary) Gouthro; parents, John and Agnes Gouthro; sister, Theresa MacDonald; and several sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws.
Visitation for the late Gerard John Gouthro will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, N.S. (902) 849-4199.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 19, 2021 at 11 a.m., with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating at St. Anne’s Parish, Main St., Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Cape Breton or charity of choice.
