Jean “Marie” Poloni
Glace Bay
It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of our loving mother, Jean Marie, of Glace Bay, on Sept. 10th, 2020 at the age of 73. She is now reunited with her beloved and devoted husband, Dino, along with her predeceased mother and father, Catherine E. (Shaw) and Stanley MacDonald.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1968. After joining CUSO, she began her nursing career in Sierra Leone, Africa with the hopes of helping those in need. There, she met her forever love, Dino, and later married in Fino Del Monte, Italy, in 1971. In 1978, she returned with her family to her roots in Cape Breton and continued her role as a nurse in maternity at both the Community and General Hospitals, where she retired in 2017. She will always be remembered for her dedication and ability to nurture mothers and their newborns.
Marie lived a simple life and was a devout Catholic. Family and faith were at the heart of it all. Her faith was strong, inspirational and never wavered. She was fortunate to have gone on several pilgrimages. She was open-minded, always up for an adventure and enjoyed traveling and going to cultural and music events. She loved trying new foods and always looked forward to a family meal after church. She loved sewing and knitting and donated many of her creations. Marie also enjoyed reading, singing, word games, swimming in the ocean and spiritually she believed that you should not pass by a penny, as it was a sign from a loved one.
She is survived by her six children, Deliz (John), Mark (Jenn), Diana (Lakmal), Enzo, Luca, and Renata; grandchildren, Emily, Gabriel, Dinao, and Rhett; brothers, Joe (Tina), Kevin (Shirlee), Xie (Debbie); sister-in-laws, Emilia, Natalina, and Patricia; and several nieces and nephews. Marie was a dedicated mother, who treasured her children and role as ‘Nonna’ to her grandchildren. She was the pillar of the Poloni and MacDonald family. Her passion was doing things for her family, and never concerned about herself.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Marie’s life on Wednesday, September 16th from 5-8 p.m. at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay (902) 849-4199. A Memorial Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Parish on Thursday, Sept 17th at 11 a.m. a burial will follow the mass at Calvary Cemetery, Bridgeport.
To honour Marie, enjoy a cup a tea, sip on a glass of wine or Cherry Brandy, share a meal with family and friends, or help someone in need.
