Obituary of Johnette Carli

Please share a memory of Johnette to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Johnette Carli of Halifax; It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Johnette, at the age of 77 on August 21, 2020. Born on July 13, 1943 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Burton Edward Chase and Elizabeth Richards. As a young woman, Johnette ventured to Halifax to start her working life at the law courts. While living in Halifax, she met the love of her life, Leo. They could be found most weekends dancing the night away at the Jubilee Boat Club where they met lifelong friends. Johnette and Leo settled in Bedford where Johnette became very involved in the community with recreation and Bedford Days. In the late 1970’s she became an entrepreneur, owning and operating Whispers of Fashion dress shop with her friend Jeanette McLean. Together they brought new fashions to their shops in Bedford and Halifax. They organized fashion shows, a memorable one being for the local Italian community, where regional attire was worn by the children of the society. From there Johnette found joy in working with youth at the Black Learning Centre in Dartmouth and Phoenix House in Halifax. Later, Johnette obtained her Social work Degree at Maritime School of Social Work and began her work as a Social Worker for the Children’s Aid Society of NS. Her retirement began after this. She became a proud member of the Dal Choral where she practiced her love of singing. Johnette loved to travel and visited many places in the world. Her favorite place being St. Giovanni di Casarsa, Italy, Leo’s home, where his family still lives and will miss her dearly. She always talked about going one last time. Loved ones that will forever miss Johnette are daughter Luisa (Brian) Burden, Bedford and daughter Roxanne (Jensen) McClean, Hammonds Plains, sister Susan (Harry) Grant, Dartmouth, sister Corrine (Ron) Matheson, Sydney, sister Bertilla (Brent) Cox, Hammonds Plains, grandchildren Keigan & Lia Burden and Chloe & Ellie McClean, many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. Johnette was predeceased by her husband Leo Carli, her parents and stepfather Roland Richards, her Aunt Marie Degaust, Uncle John Hall and, most recently, her brother Edward Chase. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Johnette’s 3 Center family at Northwood for the wonderful friendship and care she received during her time there. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northwood Foundation, to enrich the lives of its residents www.northwoodfoundation.ca/waystogive/memorial).
