George Frederick 'Fred' Whyte
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Fred Whyte at the Victoria General with his loving family by his side. Born in Glace Bay to the late Grant and Betty Whyte, Fred spent his life giving to the community he lived in for 69 years. Fred was a member of Scouts Canada where he held many positions throughout the province. He is past master of the Tyrian Youth Lodge No. 45, and past grand steward of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia. He also served in many committees in the community throughout the years. Fred was co-owner of Harbax Home Hardware in Glace bay for 25 years and worked there with his Dad for 15 years prior to this.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Joyce (Hann), his daughter Beth, and furbaby Grant. He is also survived by his sisters Mary (Robert Matthews), Anna (Rick Graham), brothers Jamie (Nancy) Whyte, and John (Dana) Whyte. Sisters-in-law Judy McNeil, Sharon (Ron) MacKillop and brothers-in-law Calvin and Chesley Hann, his Aunt Marilyn Whyte, and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents.
Visitation will be held at TJ Tracey Funeral Home Monday, January, 27 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and celebration of life will be held Tuesday January 28 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scouts Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society. We would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the VG and at the Glace Bay General Hospital for their compassionate care during this time, and Dr. James MacLean.
