Thinking of Lena with such fondness. She was the last remaining sister to my grandmother, Annie, who we lost a few years ago. Whenever I came back home to visit, Gramma and I would go and visit Lena. Lena was a sweet and caring person. Where my grandmother had an edge, she provided softness through humour. She would poke fun at Gramma when we would visit, and before we knew it, all of us would be giggling together. Lena had a way of easing heavy topics- she had a sharp ability to but things into perspective and show that in the end, nothing was ever really the end of the world and there was no reason we couldn't move beyond whatever it was that was impeding us. I didn't get to spend a lot of time with Lena, but I cherished the few visits we had through the years. My heart aches to know she is gone- I had hoped to get back to see her again, and have her meet my partner and baby boy. She would have loved Giorgio. She was the last link to my Gramma, and I would have loved to hear more stories about their childhood and their lives. They were incredible women, who worked hard and endured hardships, all the while keeping their chins up and without complaint. The best we can do is carry forward the things that we learned from these amazing women, and honour them through living our best lives.
