Obituary of Rene Joseph Fougere
Please share a memory of Rene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with profound sadness the family of Rene Fougere announce his peaceful passing on October 16, 2019. Born in Port Felix Nova Scotia he was the son of the late Laura and Alfred Fougere.
Rene spent the first part of his career with Farmers Dairy delivering milk. He loved this job immensely as did his four children when the occasional treat of chocolate milk came home with him. Rene eventually changed careers and worked until retirement for the Halifax Regional School Board as a custodian, primarily at Rockingham School. He was loved and respected by staff and students alike and made many lifelong friends during his time there.
Rene was an avid bowler and played on many leagues in and around the city. He was well known for his high scores and travelled the province quite frequently playing in tournaments. In his early years, Rene played hockey for The Rockingham Eagles and served on the Rockingham Volunteer Fire Department. He was a devoted Moosehead fan, having season tickets with the same seats for over 20 years. It wasn’t unusual to see him climb the bus stairs to travel out of province with the Mooseheads Mooster Club for their away games.
Rene will always be remembered for his love of swimming. He swam daily beginning with Centennial Pool, then Northcliffe Centre and finally the Canada Games Centre for more than 30 years.
But Rene’s greatest joy came from his family whom he loved to spend time with. He loved to travel and most often took all his children to faraway places, except for those boys only trips to see football, baseball and hockey games or more often than not a quick trip to Las Vegas.
Known as a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, Rene will be missed forever by his wife Audrey (Pope) of 63 years. Children Debbie (Bobbie White), Alayne (Fred Jennings), Karen (Glenn Findlay) and David (Debbie). Grandchildren Laura, Angela, Shannon, Nicholas, Amanda, Daniel, Kayla Jane, Jessica and Allison. Great grandchildren Ryan, Brie-Anna, Mylah, Kieran, Landon, Ava and Henry. Sisters Audrey Wambolt, Theresa Andrews, Elizabeth Francis, Anne McDade, Kathleen Ransome, Doris Billard, Rita Shubert, Rosemary Verge brothers Jimmy and Kenny.
The family would like to thank the staff of Maplestone Enhanced Care for their kindness and compassion during Rene’s stay. From the dining room staff, to the cleaners and the exceptional nursing, please know that we are so very thankful for the extraordinary care Rene received.
Rene loved all things hockey. He would be happy knowing donations in his name were made to Canadian Tires Jump Start for Kids.
