It is with great sadness that we, the family of Rita Bates, announce her peaceful passing at home on Sunday July 21, 2019.

Born in Bateston, Rita was the daughter of the late James Austin and Alice (O’Neill) Bates.

Rita retired as an employee of Point Edward Hospital and then the Addiction Center. She was very active in the NS Government Retiree Union. Rita was very involved in her community, she was a CWL member and her Christian faith was very important to her.

Rita is survived by her sisters, Eileen Boutilier and Theresa MacDonald; sisters-in-law, Iris Bates and Williamina Bates. Rita was very close to her many nieces and nephews and had a wide circle of friends.

 Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Marie White, Alice Wilcox, Susan MacDonald, David, John, Alex, Herman, Jim and Gerald Bates, as well as three infant siblings.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish, 40 Cabot St., with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Reception to follow. Interment to take place in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery, Main-a-Dieu with Fr. DiPierro. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.J.Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS (902-849-4199)
