It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Leo Joseph "Joey" O'Neil on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at the New Waterford Consolidate Hospital, New Waterford surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Leo and Veronica (MacDougall) O'Neill. Joey was employed with Devco for many years until his retirement.
Joey was an avid horseman and enjoyed harness racing. He was inducted into the Horsemen Association Hall of Fame in 2001. He was very proud of this award. With some friends he built a playground in Reserve Mines for the local children. He enjoyed going dancing, always wanted to take the girls for a spin around the dance floor.
Joey is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Florence (Gallant) O'Neill; his three daughter Joanne Donovan (Ron), Brenda (Scott)and Belinda (Bob); his wonderful grandchildren, Devon, Kara (Kevin), Hillary, Jordan (Renee), Rachel and Holly (Brent); 13 precious great grandchildren, McKenna, Sophia, Wyatt, Westin, Willow, Walker, Ben, Hailey, Leah, Hayden, Laylah, Gavin and Mya. He is also survived by his sisters, Francie Gilbert, and Mildred (John) Haitse; honorary family member Mary as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Joey was predeceased by his son-in-law, David Donovan; his brothers, Tommy, Billy, Jackie, Gerald and John Francis in infancy; his sisters, Pat Redding, Mella Popwell, Jean Clancy, Elaine MacDonald.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Wed, Jun 26, 2019 from 5-8 p.m. at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St. Glace Bay, (902-849-4199). A memorial service will take place 2:00 p.m. Thurs., Jun 27, 2019 in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Dan Boudreau officiating. Burial to follow in St. John's Cemetery, Glace Bay. Recception to follow burial at T.J. Tracey's Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Lang for her care and compassion; to the doctors, nurses and staff of the New Waterford Hospital. Thank you to the Cape Breton Homemakers for taking special care of Joey, he enjoyed seeing you come to the house.
