It is with deep sadness we regret to announce the peaceful passing of Johnnie Steele, age 85, on June 13, 2019 at home. Born May 27, 1934 in Glace Bay. He was the son of the late Collin and Mary (O’Handley) Steele.
John served in the Korean War, he was employed with DEVCO as a coalminer for many years and later worked as a painter in Port Hawkesbury for a several years. He enjoyed watching channel 17.
John is survived by his daughter, Diane (Les) McNeil; sister, Sharon (Joe) Harrietta; brother, Jimmy (Maude) McNeil; brother-in-law, Brian Croft; his wonderful grandchildren, John R. (Amber), Lee Steele, Michael McNeil (Natalie), Jamie McNeil (Dennis MacDounagh); great grandchildren, Brandon, Hannah, Maddex, John R. Jr., Quinlan, Lucy, Raine and Van; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Deborah (Littlewood), daughter, Jo-ann Steele; sisters Mary (Cletus Stanley), Donna (Gordon Currie); Diane (Eddy) Turnbull, and brother, Francis.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. P.K Cadegan, Dr. Kevin McNeil, the 3rd floor staff at GBGH, NW homemakers and the caring nurses of the VON.
Also, we would like to extend a special thank you his granddaughter- in- law, Amber Binder for the special care and time she devoted to Da.
A Funeral mass will be held 10: 00 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Holy Cross Parish, Seaview St., Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Maple Ave., where he will be laid to rest with his daughter Jo-ann. Reception to follow the burial.
