Verona Marilyn (Matheson) Simmons January 5, 1947 – May 3, 2019 Reserve Mines It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Verona ‘Roni’ surrounded by the love of family and friends.Roni was long time resident of Reserve Mines, Cape Breton. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Simmons; father, Forbes Matheson; sister, Christine Royal (Walter);brother, Arthur Matheson, and beloved nephew, Mark Royal (Melissa). Roni is survived by her mother, Jean Matheson of Reserve Mines; sisters, Elizabeth George (Rick) of Lower Sackville, Marion Matheson (Pat) of Ottawa, Madeline Matheson (Bill) of Mexico, and sister-in-law, Marcella (Babe) Angelo of Glace Bay. She will be sadly missed by cousin, and very special friend, Donna Collins (Somers) of Reserve; lifelong friends, Esther Bobbitt of Glace Bay, Dorothy McNeil of Dartmouth, and Phyllis Morrison of Victoria, as well as neighbors and close friends, Maureen Morrissey and Nancy Graham. Roni leaves behind her niece, Terri Thomas (John) of Moncton and nephews, Forbes (Rusty) Royal (Tanya) of Glace Bay, Stephen Workman (Melissa) of Ottawa, Jason George (Paula) of Tantallon, Nova Scotia, and Christopher George (Nadia) of Denver,Colorado. She also leaves her great niece, Alexa Workman; great nephews, Jarrett and Austin Thomas, Ben Royal, Andrew and Rylan George, and Nicholas and Ethan George. Roni will be fondly remembered by friends and co-workers at the Glace Bay General Hospital. She was a long-time member of the Gordon United Church in Reserve Mines. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 9th, at 2 p.m. at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay with a reception to follow. In accordance with her wishes, a graveside service will be held at a later date at the Forest Haven Memorial Gardens on Grand Lake Road. Much appreciation to the doctors and nurses in the Palliative Care department of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hospice Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, Nova Scotia, or a charity of choice in Roni’s name will be appreciated Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com.
