Obituary of Murray Owen Dwyer

Dwyer, Murray Owen, 81 of Bedford passed away Saturday, May 14th 2016 at QEII Halifax Infirmary. He was born in Three Mile Plains, N.S to Aubrey and Mildred (Ettinger) Dwyer. Having lost his parents by age of 18 mo., he was raised by his maternal grandparents. He served in the RCAF 1954-1959 as an airframe technician in Lachine, Quebec, and Grostenquin, France. Following his service and return to Canada, he was employed at Fairey Aviation for a number of years, and Volvo Canada for 10 years. He was in the Executive of the United Auto Workers Union and served as president for 2 terms. He was employed with Atlantic Lottery for 24 years, retiring in 1999. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Murray played ball, hockey and rugby in his hometown of Windsor, N.S winning a Ball Championship in 1951 and a Rugby Championship in 1952. While in the RCAF, he played hockey and ball in Canada and for the 2 Fighter Wing base in France. As a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 162, Lower Sackville, N.S, he coached and played slow pitch, served on the executive, and sat two terms as president. On October 3rd 2015 he received the 55 Year Membership Award from the Legion. He also coached minor ball and hockey in Bedford and Sackville, N.S.. Murray was a 50-year member of St. Ignatius Parish, Bedford, N.S. He is survived by his loving wife Betty (Lively) Dwyer of 51 years; sons Kevin Murray Dwyer (Lisa), Sackville; Jeffrey Owen Dwyer(Emily), Bedford; sister, Salvation Army Commissioner June Dwyer, Halifax, and three grandchildren Brett, Ben and McKenna. He was pre deceased by his brother Aubrey (sister-in-law Mary), parents Aubrey and Mildred Dwyer, grandparents Frank and Gertrude Ettinger, and a number of aunts and uncles. There will be no visitation as per Murray`s request. A Memorial service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 162, Lower Sackville, N.S at 2Pm on Friday May 20th 2016. All are welcome to attend. There will be a burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville, immediately following the service. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
