Michael Malcolm (Mickey) Currie of Lr. Sackville, NS passed away at age 84 on February 21, 2019 at the Dartmouth General Hospital with family by his side. He was the son of the late Clarence and Edythe (Meagher) Currie. Mickey grew up in Bedford, NS and spent two years in the Canadian Navy and was later employed for 20 years with Ports Canada in the Harbour Police Division and sat on the Tenancy Board of Halifax for eight years. Following his retirement, Mickey spent 10 years driving for Nova Charters, where he enjoyed meeting people from around the world and several sports teams. He also spent years as a volunteer driver for CNIB throughout the Maritimes, assisting the vision impaired with a means of transportation. Mick always enjoyed music, in particular, playing the harmonica. In his later years he formed the band the “Kindred Spirits” with a group of close friends. Music was a true passion of his whether it was playing one of his many harmonicas, the accordion or the tin whistle. Mickey loved to play Scottish and Irish slow aires and often played them with the Kindred Spirits at seniors’ complexes throughout the Halifax and Dartmouth area where his music was enjoyed by many. Mickey was always happy to share a tune during family gatherings and often enjoyed playing with his son Mark who inherited his love of music. He is survived by his wife Rita, sons Phillip Currie (Corinne) of Bedford, Mark Currie of Bedford, Lloyd Currie (Anne) of Milford, Mass., and daughter Nancy Currie of Bedford. He is also survived by his brother Garnet Currie of Nanaimo, BC, and sister Jacqueline King (Morgan) of Halifax, grandchildren Logan, Gregory, Renee, Lauren, Hannah, Kendra, Maggie and Bella, along with many nieces and nephews, as well as his sister-in-law Barbara Seeton Smith and brother-in-law Ken Smith, both of Ontario. He was predeceased by sisters Marlene Morrison of Dorchester, NB, Corrine Whitman and Kay Mahoney both of Halifax, as well as brothers Lloyd Currie, Clarence ‘Skip’ Currie, and Harold ‘Jack’ Currie also Halifax. Special thanks to the nursing staff of the Dartmouth General four East for their care and compassion in Mickey’s final hours and to our friend and neighbour Lew Woolaver, as well as Mary MacLean and Charlotte Firth Ramsay for their love, support and assistance over recent years. There will be a celebration of his life at the Bedford Legion on Sunday, April 14, 2019, from 3-5 PM.
