Obituary of Charles Richard Tucker Longmire

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
We are absolutely heartbroken that our much adored son and brother, Charlie, passed away at home on July 22nd, with his loving family at his side. We are so grateful that, as a family, we were able to have this profoundly meaningful time together. Family members who were away were also very “present” and lovingly connected with phone calls and text messages. Born in Middleton, NS on September 2nd, 1952, Charlie was the son of Audrey (Walsh) Dargie and the late Jack Longmire. He attended schools in Bridgetown and Halifax. His vocation as a talented cook took him on a journey across Canada for many years, eventually settling in Halifax. He especially loved to cook and bake for family and friends. A genuine polymath, Charlie was an ace at Jeopardy, broke his own record of completing the NYT crossword puzzle in 27 minutes, a voracious reader, an inveterate library hound and a self-titled “Super Destroyer” at Scrabble. Charlie’s love of books was matched by his love of music. Obscure and legendary greats in blues, rock and roll, country, zydeco and yodeling found their way into his vinyl record collection. Gentleness, generosity and humility are qualities which express his character. His unique personality, wry sense of humour and quirky fun charmed family, friends and all who shared time with him. Charlie resisted our consumer culture and enjoyed the simple things in life. His love for his family was first and foremost. He was adored by his nieces and nephews, as he adored them – communicating regularly over very long distances with wit, humour and genuine interest in their lives. Charlie’s deep gratitude for family was summed up in his own words – “I am the luckiest guy in the world.” Besides his mother, Audrey, he is survived by sisters, Susan (Jim MacNeill), Linda and Doreen; nieces, Kathleen (Lucas) and Megan; nephews, Ryan (Brandy), Justin (Shuka), Geoff, Calvin (Amber), Liam and Patrick; grandnephew, William; grandniece, Mila. Charlie was predeceased by his father, Jack Longmire, and brother, Bill. A big thank you to Palliative Home Care with a very special thanks to Glenna Thornhill. Donations may be made to Palliative Home Care or a charity of your choice. Notification of a celebration of Charlie’s life will be made at a later date.
