April 1, 1951 – August 20, 2017
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Dan O’Malley who passed away at home in Bedford. The words below were written by Dan as a lasting message of love to his family and friends.
“Many people describe and evaluate a person’s life by their accomplishments, education, work, hobbies, memberships, or successes. I would like to describe my life in terms of the many people who touched me with their lives and those I might have touched with mine.
Mary Gorman was my wife, best friend, mentor, companion and team mate. Through her example, I learned so much about compassion, humility, trust and tenderness. I was so proud of my sons, Ryan and Conor O’Malley, who I loved deeply and Mary’s daughter Jennifer Backman.
My parents, Marie and Gerry O’Malley were a special gift that I was so grateful for, as were my amazing siblings, two brothers, Tom (Heike Wenaus) and Greg (Jenine Arab), and two sisters, Elizabeth Ann (Paul Cody) and Carolyn (Wayne Jackson) as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews and Mary’s siblings, Wayne, Howie and Kathleen Gorman.
I was privileged to learn from and thank the many inspiring teachers throughout my lifetime from St. Stephen’s, Saint Patrick’s High School, St. Mary’s and Western University. I enjoyed my own small businesses and many loyal employees who I always considered colleagues and friends.
I thank my best ‘golf buddy’ Ed Brown for all the drives to and from the course and so many other special friends who made retirement enjoyable.
Special thanks to Dr. Richard Bendor-Samuel, Dr. Brendan Carr, Dr. Lillian Siu, medical oncologist, Toronto, VON Nurses, Monica Flinn and Dr. Jeff Dempster, Palliative Care, as they each personify both compassion and the best of the medical profession. I also thank Father Owen Connolly and Father Patrick Cosgrove, who helped me to accept the reality of death.
I hope to be remembered simply for my desire to be kind, loving and compassionate. My sincerest apologies to anyone I may have inadvertently hurt through my lack of humility, patience or understanding. Thank you dear Lord, and thank you to all those who made my life happy and rewarding.”
