Joel Keith Baird It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Keith Baird on September 3, 2017, at the Glace Bay Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Glace Bay on March 7, 1936, he was son of Edward and Mary Anne (MacDonald) Baird. Keith was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Throughout his life Keith had many jobs. He worked as a purchasing agent and financial controller for Canada Packers, the Heavy Water Plant, Oceanside Assistance Group Ltd. and in the finance office of the College of Cape Breton. After his retirement, Keith reopened his family bicycle shop, Baird’s Bicycle Shop Ltd. While working at the shop he met many wonderful people. Keith understood that not everyone was able to pay and he often replied when asked the cost, “No charge.” Keith made himself available to many local businesses and organizations and gave guidance to help with their success. At the time of his death Keith was employed with the Glace Bay Harbour Authority. Keith was once a member of the Knights of Columbus, a past president of the Kinsmen, and a former chairman of the Food Bank. Gardening was one of Keith’s greatest pleasures. His friends and neighbors benefitted from his bountiful vegetable gardens. He loved working out in his yard and took great pride in his property. Keith was an avid sport’s fan who never gave up on his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. Keith is survived by his companion, Jean Kavanagh; his daughters, Brenda and Mary-Pat(Ben), both of Ottawa; his two grandsons, Noah and Nicholas; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Warren; sister-in-law, Nootsie; and his sisters, Gean (Charles Le Forte) and Wanda (Tom MacDougall). Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, September 11, 2017 with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. with Deacon Lorne MacNeil officiating at T. J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Ns 902-849-4199. Donations may be made to the Glace Bay Food Bank or a charity of one’s choice.
