Obituary of Gerald O’Neill

Gerald “Jerry” O’Neill It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerald (Jerry) O’Neill on Aug. 18, 2017 at Kensington Hospice in Toronto. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Leo and Veronica (Lollie) O’Neill. Jerry moved to Toronto at an early age and began a career as a long-distance truck driver. His career led him to many places, including Ontario, the Prairies, British Columbia and Alaska. Jerry loved the outdoors and he loved to share stories about the places he saw in his travels. Jerry is survived by his children, Bill and Corrine; as well as two grandchildren, Ryan and Alex (Tom). He is also survived by his siblings, Joey (Florence), Reserve Mines, Elaine MacDonald, North Sydney, Francie Gilbert, Glace Bay and Mildred (John) Haitse, Killarney, Ontario as well as many nieces and nephews. Jerry was especially close to his nephew, Billy O’Neill, with whom he spent hours talking and reminiscing. He is also survived by Charlene MacDonald, his companion and best friend for many years. Besides his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his brothers, John Francis in infancy, Jackie, Tommy and Billy; sisters, Pat Redding, Mella Popwell and Jean Clancy; sisters-in-law, Winnie O’Neill and Josie O’Neill; brothers-in-law, Fred Redding, Maurice Popwell, Jack MacDonald and Gerald Gilbert. A special thank you to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Kensington Hospice for the care and comfort you gave to Jerry during his stay. In addition a special thank you to Charlene for being there in both good times and bad. You were a very special part of Jerry’s life and will always be part of our family. Big thanks to Kaarlo for your love and friendship during our stay in Toronto. To Billy there are no words to say to thank you for your compassion and caring for Jerry in his final months. Jerry was extremely proud to share stories, laughter and love with you about his life growing up in Glace Bay onwards to his travels across the country. Jerry enjoyed the time you spent together and always felts safe. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 11-1 p.m. with a service to follow at 1 p.m. with Deacon Lorne MacNeil officiating at T. J.
