Obituary
MURPHY-MATTHEWS, Joy Collette – 1957-2019 (61), of Halifax, NS. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Joy – on Friday April 26, 2019 at home surrounded by her family. Joy was a daughter of the late Ernest Hamilton and Jeanette Murphy of Beechville. Besides her parents, Joy was predeceased by her brother Patrick and special niece Brandy. She is survived by her husband Paul Matthews, sons, Danny (Rosie), David and Keith (Kaleigh); step-sons Jonathon (Megan), Joshua (Jen), and Joel (Laura), siblings; Eric (Veronica), Herman (Shirley), Rose, Yvonne, Paulette (Roy), Susan (Mike), Madeline, Danny (Rosanne), Andrew (Laurie), Margo (Frankie). Joy had 7 grandchildren that she loved dearly; Mahkiya, Oshun, Aliah, Talise, Niyah, Jaadeh and Nixon.
Joy was employed with the Department of National Defense, most recently FMF Cape Scott, for more than 30 years. She was an advocate for women’s rights and unionized workers. For the past 10 years, Joy was the Chairperson of the Regional Women’s Committee of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the Chair of the Adoptive Family for Fleet Maintenance Facility – Cape Scott and Shop Steward of the Union of National Defence Employees local 80406. In Feb. 2018, Joy received the PSAC Award of Recognition for Human Rights Activism. Joy will be remembered for her caring, kind, and loving nature. She had a special relationship with all she encountered. Joy was loved and appreciated by her husband, sons, brothers, sisters, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, dearest friend Lydia Loppie, daughter-in-law Lisa, close friends and co-workers.
Special thanks to the Palliative Care Unit, V.O.N staff, Continuing Care Services and DND friends for the care, love, support, calls and simple acts of kindness you provided to Joy during her final days.
Visitation will be held at TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 71 McQuade Lake Crescent, Bayers Lake (902-835-4212) on Thursday May 2, 2019 from 1-2 pm followed by a celebration of life service at 2 pm. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com.
