Wilfred Howard

Obituary of Wilfred Patrick Howard

With deep sorrow, the family of Wilfred ‘Butch’ Patrick Howard announce his passing on October 20, 2024, at the age of 93. A life-long resident of Mira Road, he was the son of Wilfred Samuel Howard and Mary Josephine Power. Working with his father from a young age hauling coal with a horse and cart, then later working for Brookfield Dairy and the Sydney Steel Plant, Dad eventually began his own business, Howard and Travis Trucking. Dad loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had a large garden in his later years. We always looked forward to his rhubarb. Dad was also a skilled builder, building his own home, a summer bungalow, and a duplex on Rotary Drive. He was a jack of all trades and could turn his hand to anything. Dad was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others. Though largely a homebody, Dad did enjoy travelling. From travels to Expo ’67 in Montreal, to a trip to Greece in 1997, his favourite place to travel was Newfoundland, the birthplace of his mother. Of his numerous visits there, one of his lasting memories was riding the ‘Newfie Bullet’ across Newfoundland in the 1950’s. Dad is survived by his daughter, Allison Howard, son-in-law, John Phyne, brother, George Howard (Joanne), and sister, Joan Smith, along with several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Donald Howard, and sisters, Catherine Howard, Karen Howard, Gladys Travis, Harriet Beardmore, Rose Buckland, and Ellen Aucoin. The family thanks the staff of The Cove Guest Home for the care given to Wilfred during his time as a resident. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902-539-7175. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
