Obituary of Mervyn Joseph MacEachern

It is with much sadness that we, the family of Mervyn (Merv) Joseph MacEachern, announce his passing after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Mervyn was born in Sydney, N.S. He was the son of the late Donald and Ellen (MacDonald) MacEachern. He is survived by siblings; John (JJ), Mabou and Sydney; Don (Sylvia), Sydney; Alex, Northside East Bay; Helen (late Charles Read), Fredericton; Evelyn (Fred) Green, Howie Centre; Edmund (Colleen), Sydney. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Cheryl (Stephen), Glen (Cathy), Michael (Kalin), Beth (Travis), Christine (Elliott), Fred (Jenn), Jen (Andrew), 9 grand nieces and nephews, cherished aunt Sadie MacIntyre and friends Bryden, Wanda and Daniel MacDonald. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother-in-law, Charles Read. Mervyn was a graduate of the 1970 Civil Engineering Technology program of the Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology. His working career was in the construction industry working at various times as an instrument man, project supervisor and inspector. Mervyn enjoyed daily drives, maintaining his yard, and going to “the country” at Northside East Bay. He was very proud of his fifth-generation connection to the family land at East Bay. He was close to his family, nieces and nephews and their children. The family would like to thank the staff of the dialysis unit at the CBRH who became like family, EHS, unit 4C staff, Osprey patient sitters, and Drs. Thana, Kelly and Bonnar for the care and compassion provided to Mervyn throughout his illness and recent hospital stay. We would also like to thank neighborhood friends Danny Fortune and Paul Kennedy for the support they generously provided throughout the years. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902-539-7175. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 12 to 2 pm followed by a chapel service at 2 pm with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Church Cemetery, East Bay, with a reception to follow at the East Bay (Southside) Fire Hall. Donations in Mervyn’s memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, St. Mary’s Cemetery East Bay, the Kidney Foundation or charity of one’s choice.
