Simon “Buddy” Sulliman
Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with deep sadness and loving hearts that we share the passing of our dad, Simon “Buddy” Sulliman, on Friday, September 6, 2024, after a brave battle with illness. Born on August 18, 1936, he was a true “Bay Boy”. While he loved to travel the world, for his whole life he called Glace Bay his home. The son of Simon and Ida (Andrews) Sulliman, he was the youngest of 11 children. Nine of whom predeceased him. Leone Pringle (Roberta, NS) is his only surviving sibling.
Dad will be missed beyond words by his four children: Doug Sulliman (Glace Bay, NS), Celeste (Paul Marshe, Fall River, NS), Jamie (Heather, Dunrobin, ON) and Sheri (John Higgins, Sydney Mines, NS). Even more than being a dad, he loved his role as a Grampie to his five grandsons Matthew, Bryan, Lucas, Josh, and Owen; his five granddaughters Samantha, Teddy, Scarlett, Vivian, and Tommy, and all their spouses and partners who he also loved like his own. The icing on the cake was becoming a Great-Grampie to his five great-grandchildren Sophie, Olivia, Benjamin, Lily, and Auggie. All the grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s friends and teammates knew him as their Grampie too.
Buddy loved people and could hold a conversation with anyone, as proven by how long it would take him to get through a shopping mall or leave a ball game or hockey game. He made friends wherever he was and maintained strong friendships with people he met from all over the world. As much as he loved people, he loved sports. As a young man he played football, baseball and hockey and in 2023 he was inducted into the Maritime Sports Hall of Fame with his teammates from the ’56 Glace Bay “Cinderella” Junior Miners. His kids grew up in the rink and could skate as soon as they could walk. As a Grampie, he rarely, if ever, missed one of his grandkids’ judo tournaments, baseball games, hockey games or dance recitals. His heart was as big as his personality.
Heartfelt thanks to all the extended family, friends, and health care workers who provided care and support to Buddy, and his family, especially his doctors and nurses on third and fourth floors and the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Your kindness, care and compassion is appreciated beyond measure: “Potato,Potato,Potato, Fries.”
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 4-8 p.m. in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. A family celebration of life and graveside service will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations are encouraged to your local minor sports team in his honour.
