As a science teacher trying to contribute modestly to school life by coaching each year, I was semi-regularly in the Boys P.E. office. I always found a warm welcome, but when Art was there, the level of conviviality went up significantly.
Of course I also had the privilege of knowing Ann from her pleasant service in the office.

We have fond memories of all the dinners shared over the years with Art and Ann. Both on the Danforth as well as in our homes.
Art even accepted the challenge of giving us golf lessons. We think he knew we’d never be great but that didn’t deter him. After the lessons, we would go for a chat and a delicious lunch which was always good fun.
We very much appreciated Art’s friendship over the years and we will miss him.

Art was an incredibly kind soul. He was the first one to befriend us when we moved to Halifax 13 years ago and we often enjoyed the company and hospitality of Ann and Art. They are both exceptional people and we feel extremely blessed to know them. We will miss Art, but I feel confident that his beautiful soul is with his daughter Catherine and he is onto his next great adventure ❤️

Art and I were colleagues at Humberside. Playing pool in the Staff Room became a tradition. During our spare time, I certainly learned about California Rules" as did all of his students.
But he was very patient and lots of fun to be around.......even learned about "running helping your hearing".
In a short time Ann and Art and Jerry and I became good friends and shared many beautiful meals at the Bennett's home. We fondly remember several New Year's Eves.........one course every hour......until the clock struck 12:00!
Many emotions over the years...we remember Elizabeth and Jim's beautiful wedding and the tragic loss of dear Catherine.........she was a treasure!
We loved the visit we had from Ann and Art when we left Toronto for Grey County.......hiking some of our trails and resting later with a meal and a beverage or two.
A beautiful family and a beautiful couple. You knew Ann meant business when she called him "Arthur"!
You will certainly be missed...........two Angels now watching over us.

Art was always so much fun to play golf with, especially if you were playing some kind of game, especially a card game. e.g. you would get the monkey card if you hit a tree or the fish card if you landed in water. If you ended up with it at the end of the round , there was some kind of penalty, maybe financial. Art would hand these out with that grin on his face or make up a new rule on the spot, which he would call a "California Rule". RIP big guy.

I’m truly grateful to have been coached by him. His legacy and teachings will live on not only in the memories of many games and practices but also in the mentorship, guidance and stories he shared. A kind and generous man, Art will be sorely missed by his loving family. I have such happy memories of my visit to see Ann in Halifax a few years back. Art was a gracious host and tour guide as we explored the home they had made for themselves after moving from Toronto. A lovely luncheon at a winery on a beautiful day is etched in my mind, just one of many happy memories. My love and sympathy go out to all his family and many friends. Pat Roberts

I have fond memories of Mr. Bennett from my time at HCI. I particularly remember him teaching the nutrition part of our grade 12 PE class and the positive environment he created there. He also allowed me to join his grade 9 boys coaching staff while I was completing my NCCP training as a part of OAC PE; he allowed me the space to take a lead and supported my coaching journey. Thank you, Mr Bennett

I played football with Art at Riverdale MANY years ago!
He was by far my tallest wide receiver, I was the quarterback.
In one game I passed the ball to Art expecting him to catch it and run but was surprised when it went through his hands. After the game I asked him what happened. "i saw two balls", he said. Art wore glasses and wasn't wearing them for the game. An anecdote of many over our high school years. That never would have happened on the basketball court where Art excelled.
Art was a great guy and is one of the friends I remember still from my high school years.
My condolences to his family.

I had Mr Bennett for Geography and Phys Ed, and he helped coach us as well. He was a great teacher with a wonderful heart. I am a teacher myself now and I quote him often, both in the classroom and in the gym. My students react the same way we did when I use his “California Riles”! He made a lasting impact. My condolences to his friends and family.

Art was part of the panel that hired me for my position in the Phys-ed Department at Humberside CI. I remember his sense of humour from that first meeting. I then had the pleasure of working with Art for a couple of years before his retirement. His warmth, support and sense of fun were always appreciated. Sending my sincere condolences to Ann and the rest of his family.

Art was a great mentor to me my first years teaching HPE at HCI. As a new head to the department trying to find my way Art made me feel welcome from day one and helped me in many ways. We become good friends and he taught me lots of games to use in HPE class or on the golf course, and how to make some good soups!! Always a generous and gracious gentleman!! The Humberside community benefited in many ways from his professionalism a commitment to students both in and outside of the classroom. He always spoke of how he enjoyed his grandkids. My condolences Ann and to the rest of his loving family.

I’m honoured to have been one of Art’s students and players at Humberside in the 90s. For a kid who needed a father figure, Art was always there. He inspired me to be a phys ed teacher. The leadership camps he ran for us were one of the best parts of high school for me and my friends. I ended up running camps for my school at the same facility and it brought back so many great memories. His legacy lives on, because all the students I teach now, and have taught, are getting some of the Mr. Bennett experience through me. I can’t say enough about him, but for me it boils down to this: he was a good man who cared about people.

I will miss my "favourtie" Uncle so much!
He was such a happy, fun loving, & knowledgeable sports expert!
I remember as a young girl having multi-course feasts with home made horseradish that would ignite every nerve in my nose!!!
I will always remember golfing with him! He always made it better & instilled confidence in everyone's abilities.
"California" Rules were always a part of any games - so fun!
He had an amazing huge laugh!
I also remember him having a great knowledge of trees and plants. I remember many gardens at Marigold in Mississauga.
He really was a great teacher and influenced / inspired so many.
He was a great dancer - I will always cherish "waltzing" with him at Elizabeth & Jim's Wedding. I still keep that photo on my fridge.
He had a wonderful zest for life and cherished his family.
Blessings to all his family as we all hurt at losing him ❤

Dr. Mrs. Bennett, I was so sad to hear of Mr. Bennett’s passing. I can’t tell you the impact that your husband had on my life. He took this skinny insecure young man and took him under his wing and helped me become more confident in myself in all of my endeavours. He changed my life in an incredibly positive way. I will forever be indebted to him.
Mr. Bennett taught me so much and I never had anyone believe in me like he did.
I can only hope that he was surrounded by loved ones and that he was comfortable in his final moments.
I am sure that he will try to implement his California Rules in heaven.
My sincerest condolences to you and your family and I wish that I could be there in person to show my respect and appreciation for this great man.
Sincerely yours,
Mario Sturino

I had the distinct privilege of caring for Coach at various points over the past year. I was so touched by his positivity, team spirit, and above all, his love for his family. Although I knew they might take a little extra time, I looked forward to my visits with Coach each day for the stories he’d share with me, usually about his pride for his grandchildren. Without fail, he’d flip open the notebook on his bedside to the detailed list of topics he wanted to discuss, but I would also spy a page where, ever the teacher, he jotted down the names of the many resident doctors and medical students involved in his care.
It was an honour to witness the devoted care that Elizabeth and Ann provided not only to Coach while in hospital, but to their entire family. We should all be so lucky to experience such unwavering dedication and love at the end of life.
I feel so fortunate to have gotten to know Coach for a short time and know that he will be a patient whose story sticks with me throughout my career.
Keeping your family in my thoughts in this difficult time,
Dr. Danica Desjardins
