Obituary of Annie Buchanan

Annie Buchanan, 89 years of age of Little River, Vict. Co, Cape Breton, passed away on August 12, 2024, at Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Breton Cove, she was the daughter of Murdock John & Sadie May MacInnis. In the quiet early morning hours of August 12th, our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, and friend Annie Buchanan—aka Grannie Annie—drew her final breath. Her last 5 years were spent between My Cape Breton Home and the Northside Community Guest Home. The previous 9 years were spent in Barra Glen, Iona. Of course, her heart really never left Little River. From her rocking chair in Little River, you would often find her keeping watch over the fishermen heading to and from the wharf, listening to the VHF in case help was needed. With generous hospitality, Annie and Allister always welcomed people to their home—remembered fondly by many as the ceilidh house—with some of the best food to be found on the North Shore. Mom loved her family and friends with a quiet nature and steady heart. She will be missed by many. She was proud to have earned the honour to be elected as an elder at St. Ann's Bay United Church. She enjoyed many years singing in Heather's choirs and meeting with her close friends in the UCW group. She missed everyone deeply when she could no longer live alone in Little River. She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. A good, hot cup of loose-leaf tea, a delicious meal, a great laugh with visiting family and friends. Donnie Campbell's radio show "Celtic Serenade" would always be playing on Sunday evening. We will think of her when his show comes on. We will fondly remember our visits with her and the wonderful food she lovingly prepared for us all. Annie is survived by her sons; Lee (Eleanor), Westmount, and Rodney (Patricia), Ingonish; daughters, Colleen (Tim), Westmount, and Janet (Tim), Barra Glen; brothers, Nelson MacInnis of Sydney Mines, and Charles MacInnis of Sydney; grandchildren, Adele Buchanan (Dave), Halifax, Amber Buchanan (Jimmy), South Bar, Kelsey Cooke, Westmount, Kyle Cooke (Maddie), Sydney, Kelly Buchanan (Jocelyn), Halifax, Conley Fitzgerald (Shaylee), Cold Lake Alberta, Brydon Fitzgerald, Ingonish, Hannah & Rory MacNeil, Barra Glen, Sadie Buchanan, South Bar, Nevaeh Buchanan, Halifax, Isla Flahr, Halifax, and Rylan Cooke, Westmount. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Allister, son Allison and brother Donald MacInnis. There will be no wake, the funeral will take place on Saturday, August 24th 2:00 pm at St. Ann’s Bay United Church, Barrachois, officiated by Rev. Dianne Kempt.
