Obituary of Alice Mildred Kyte
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Alice Kyte - our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Having lived a long and healthy life, Mom passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on July 26, 2024. She was one month shy of her 100th birthday party.
Our mother was born in Gardiner Mines on August 31, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Mary Ann (MacDonald) and Patrick Mackie. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Our mother lived her married life on Kyte’s Hill, Grand Lake Road, with her loving husband, Charles Kyte, who predeceased her in 2008. She had unwavering love for her family. Mom took great joy preparing for and celebrating gatherings at the family home where many wonderful memories were created. Looking back, Mom was always there to lend a helping hand and to offer words of support.
Mom appreciated the beauty of nature and loved to spend time outdoors. She was creative and crafty. She especially enjoyed wool felting, painting, knitting and baking. Her grandchildren will always remember Gram’s cupcakes. They were a favorite treat. Our mother constantly amazed us. Her computer skills meant she could follow her family’s achievements and send kind and supportive messages to those she loved. As well, she was constantly adding to her knowledge of the world which made her a great conversationalist.
In the past, she was an active member of St. Augustine’s Parish CWL and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Grand Lake Road Fire Department where she and Dad enjoyed many special events.
Mom is survived by her five daughters; Marilyn (Archie) MacEachern, Charlene (Vince) Walker, Audrey (Bill) Murphy, Debbie (Pat O’Connor) Kyte, Elaine Kyte (David). She is also survived by her grandchildren; Alison (Scott Fulton) Walker, Glenn (Disa) Walker, Timothy (Stephanie) MacEachern, David MacEachern, Ryan (Kara) Murphy, Liam (Amanda) Murphy, Caitlin Murphy (Reno), Megan and Bryce O’Connor, Kelsey and Brooke Ferguson; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Cameron Fulton, Hailey and Kathryn MacEachern, Noal and Ellis Walker, Breton, Isla, Madilyn, William and Charlie Murphy.
We are grateful for the care Mom received at the Northside Community Guest Home and CBRH, especially Dr. Ryan Kelly, and the staff in the Palliative Care Unit.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902- 539-7175. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 24, at 11 am at the funeral home, reception to follow. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice in her name.
