Obituary of Frances Margaret Hannay

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving wife, mother and grandmother, Frances Margaret Hannay (Riley) on July 18, 2024, at the Sagewood Continuing Care Home in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. She was 84 years old. Frances was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 24, 1939. She grew up in Spryfield and it was there that she met her partner in life, Robert. They were married in 1960. Robert and Frances spent 64 years together, residing in Hubley for most of their marriage. Frances attended Central Spryfield School and graduated from Maritime Secretarial School. She worked at the VG Hospital, Department of Motor Vehicles and then chose to be a stay-at-home Mom after having her only daughter, Lorrie. She returned to the workforce as a Retail Associate with Sears and retired from there. Fran was very involved in her community, volunteering with the United Church Workers and Trinity United Church and spending many years as a Girl Guide Leader. She loved her family and always made sure to stay connected with all her siblings, nieces and nephews. She loved to garden, bake and spend time fussing over her granddaughters and her “co-owned” dogs, Penny and Paris. Fran was the youngest of seven siblings and was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Hazel (Westhaver) Riley, brothers Wayne, Harold, Carmen and Clarence (Junior) and sisters Shirley and Dorothy (Dodo). Fran is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Lorrie (John), granddaughters, Hannah and Hayley and many nieces and nephews. The last several years of her life was spent enduring the effects of Alzheimer’s/Dementia. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 26th at 11AM at Trinity United Church, 67 Trinity Way, Timberlea NS, B3T 1B8, Rev. Kevin Cox officiating. A reception will follow.
