Mary Catherine McIntyre, 103
Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Mary Catherine McIntyre (McDonald) of Glace Bay, at the age of 103, on Friday, July 12, 2024. Mary was the daughter of the late Donald and Florence McDonald.
For the past year Mary lived in Parkland Assisted Living in Sydney, it was just the social environment that Mom loved. She made many friends there, but her best pal was Annie Hashem. What a pair! We will be forever grateful to the staff of Parkland for their love, care, and compassion. Mom truly considered it home.
As a lifetime educator and philanthropist, Mary gave of herself to whomever needed her charity, knowledge, or experience. She loved to speak of her early days in Glace Bay and of her many adventures, both home and across the country, as a teacher. Mom loved sewing, quilting with the ladies in Reserve and attending her Book Club at the Glace Bay Library. Little slowed her down and she continued all these hobbies until recently, including happily accepting an invitation to present at the Glace Bay Historical Society at the age of 97. Mom loved solving crossword and word puzzles and was excited to have completed the NYT Sunday puzzle with her granddaughter, Diane. Mary was proud of her family’s achievements and was always quick to recount the latest goings-on with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her only son Jim McIntyre, Glace Bay; daughter Marie (Baxter) MacDonald, Hammond Plains, their daughters: Diane, Kathleen (Daryl), Mary-Anne (Michael), and Colleen (Terence); daughter Valerie (Greg) Livingstone, Lake Ainslie, their daughters: Tessa and Linnea; as well as eight great grandchildren.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Cliff McIntyre, a baby in infancy, as well as her parents, and brother Jim (DD) McDonald.
A family service will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024, at 1 p.m., with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding, in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. Interment will take place in St. John’s Cemetery, Wallace Rd.
