Carmel Popwell
Glace Bay, N.S.
Known by all for her kindness and generosity, Carmel Popwell will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother. She was welcomed home by God on July 10th, 2024, surrounded by her faith and her family.
Carmel is survived by her husband of sixty-eight years, Donald Popwell, her son Benny (Sandra) Popwell, and three daughters, Anne (Joan) Popwell, Madonna (Kelly) Popwell, and Marie (Brad) Penney, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carmel is also survived by her brother Harry “Bull” (Alona) Young.
She was predeceased by her parents Annie and Floyd Young, as well as her brothers, Richard, Johnny, Fabian, and Albert.
Carmel was born and raised on the shores of number 2. Her love of skating brought her to the love of her life of sixty-eight years, Donnie. Together they raised four beautiful children, and they were blessed with nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Carmel was known to extend her kindness and generosity to anyone in their time of need. She was devoted to her love and faith in God and was dedicated to supporting her church through her artistic gifts, providing homemade crafts to raise money at church fairs. Carmel was also dedicated to her job as an office worker, working for various companies in Glace Bay and Sydney. She retired at the age of sixty-six to spend more time spoiling her beloved grandchildren, who adored their sleepovers at Nanny’s and Poppy’s place.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the incredible staff at Taigh-Na Mara, who treated mom like their own mother. They will never be forgotten for the generosity and compassion they showed not only towards Carmel, but her family. In addition, a special thanks to palliative care, who went above and beyond to make her final days peaceful.
In lieu of flowers, her family would like to request donations to be made to a local Palliative Care Unit, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, or a charity of your choosing.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in St. Anne’s Parish with Fr. Macleen Anyanwu officiating. There will be a reception in the lobby immediately following mass.
