It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Joe Batten, age 72, on Monday, July 8, 2024 at Hospice Cape Breton, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Allie and Kay Batten.
Joe was a phenomenal baseball player and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. In his youth he competed in the Canada Games. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He loved gardening, playing golf and baseball. He was a carpenter by trade and worked for DEVCO and later in life worked for Town House. He was a cornerstone of the local community. He was an avid baseball and hockey fan who loved cheering for his Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Joe is survived by his son, Chris (Kimberly) Batten; brother, Allie (Dawn) Batten; sisters, Katherine (Peter) Byrne and Ginny (Kevin) Burke; many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife and soulmate Deborah ‘Debbie’ (MacKinnon) Batten.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, July 12, 2024, from 12-2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Fr. Macleen officiating, all taking place at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 3470 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS (902-849-4199).
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hopsice Cape Breton.
We would like to send a special thank you to the An Cala Palliative Care unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital as well as Hospice Cape Breton and the entire staff and volunteers for their loving care of Joe at the end of his life. Your kindness and care knows no bounds and you will forever have our love and gratitude.
