Margaret “Margie” Jane McCumber Glace Bay, N.S. It is with great sadness that we the family of Margaret “Margie” Jane McCumber announce her passing on June 19, 2024, at the Glace Bay General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Margie was to celebrate her 100th birthday on July 16th. She was born to the late Elizabeth Jane (White) and Allan Joseph MacDonald in Glace Bay in 1924. Mom was a woman of great faith. She put her faith in the Lord and the support and strength of her family to get her through many hardships she experienced throughout her life. She married Roy McCumber on July 1st, 1960, and lovingly raised two children: David and Leanna. Sadly, Roy passed away in 1978 leaving Mom to continue to raise us on her own. And what an amazing job she did! She was the best Mom anybody could ask for and always had the time to listen, give guidance, lots of love and impart many of pearls of wisdom. Her strength, independence, tenacity, and resilience were key to her ability to live on her own. Margie loved to skate. She enjoyed meeting her friends at the Bayplex on Wednesday mornings until the age of 91. She also loved to oil paint and enjoyed being a member of the Glace Bay Art Club. Many of her artworks are displayed in the homes of family and friends. She also belonged to the Red Hat Society. One of her passions throughout her life was gardening and she took immense pride in her flower and strawberry gardens. She loved music, cats and always loved wearing lipstick, even if she was just out picking blueberries! Our Mom was a master at making a dollar stretch – growing up we were often the beneficiary of beautiful homemade clothes and numerous homecooked meals especially the treat of her delicious homemade meat pies on Christmas Eve. Margie is survived by her son, David (Lori) McCumber (Midgic, NB), daughter Leanna (Todd) MacDonald (Albert Bridge), grandchildren Mark (Kayla), Rebekah, Connor (Erika), Bhreagh McCumber, Barrett MacDonald and Hilary (Phill) Morin, one great-grandchild Audree Jane McCumber and another expected in early 2025. She is also survived by nieces Judy Barrett, Debbi McNeil, Donna Marie McNeil, and nephews John “Mutch” MacDonald and Joe Parsons Sr. She was the last surviving member of her family… predeceased by sisters Mary Martha, Emma, Lilly (Willy) Fowler, Leanna (Davey) Hart, Emma Ann (Lou) Nutter, and Josie (Vaughnie) Mac Gregor and brothers Billy, Allan (Betty), John (Hazel), Alfred and Roddie (Norma). We will be forever grateful to Donna Holloway, Mom’s neighbour and friend, whose love and support enabled Mom to live safe and comfortably in her own home. A reception will be held in the foyer of Holy Cross Church in Glace Bay on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from 10 – 11 a.m. Funeral service to follow at 11 a.m., with Father Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery following the service. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA, Holy Cross Parish or a charity of choice. Since her 100th Birthday Celebration was planned for this date, following the service family and friends are invited back to the home of her daughter and son-in-law, 67 Sangaree Rd, Albert Bridge to enjoy some food and refreshments and maybe share a favorite story about Margie. Hope to see you there! Mom, you were our ray of sunshine, our shining star and our world just became a little dimmer without you. We will forever carry your love in our hearts forever.
