Elizabeth “Betty” (Higgins) MacDonald, 84
Dominion, N.S.
Elizabeth MacDonald (Higgins) “Betty” age 84 of Dominion, NS, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in Celtic Court, Sydney with her loving daughter Paula by her side.
A visitation will be held in T.J. Tracey’s Funeral Home, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, on Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 4-7 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be held in Immaculate Conception on Friday June 28, 2024, at 11 a.m., with Father Daniel Boudreau officiating, Interment to follow in Saint Eugene’s Cemetery, Dominion. Reception to follow burial in Branch 78 Legion, Dominion.
Betty was born in Dominion on January 2nd, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Michael Patrick Higgins “Mickey” and Mary Elizabeth Higgins (MacPherson) “Sis”.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Brenda, Paula (Patty). Grandchildren Arthur (Dianna), Michelle (Alex), Elizabeth (Ryan), and Natasha. Grand great grandchildren, Ava, Michael, Alexander, Ryan, Sebastian, Jake and many special nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, Arthur MacDonald. Great granddaughter, Allie, son-in-law James. Brothers, Melvin, Johnny, and sister Margie. Cousin and close friend, Garvie.
Betty was incredibly involved in her community and took immense pride in all that she accomplished in her 84 years. As a commission officer air cadet of the original “Angus L MacDonald” squad 623, she then became area director of the NS Air Cadet League; Betty also received an award for outstanding service from the Royal Canadian Air cadets of Canada. She was president of the ladies auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion (Br. 78) for 8 years and received meritorious service award for same; Betty was also a former member of the Royal Branch 3 Canadian Legion.
Betty was a board member for family services, GB and Eucharist Administer for many years. Betty was proud to be the first female police officer of the town of Dominion along with being the first female appointed to Dominion recreation committee. She taught fitness classes at the fitness center and enjoyed her time there. She was an avid dart player, soft ball player, horseshoe player, and taught scouts, and cubs. She was proud to have received the “Dominion Hawk, Golden Hawk Award.” Betty took much pride in her job of many years at the Correction Centre. Most known as “Betty by the Book.”
Betty had many special friends. Lisa, Cathy, Sheila, Shirley, Brenda, Wendy and long-time friend, Marie. She enjoyed a cold Coors light in a small glass surrounded by family and friends often joking amongst the crowd. “Get a Grip” was her favorite quote and trademark. She had a deep sense of humor and class. You wouldn’t see Betty out if she didn’t have her hair done. She had a love for animals, especially her baby Ginger. Betty was the staple of her family, and her loss is felt immensely.
Special Thank you to Celtic Court staff and doctor, for your care over the past year and a half. She formed many relationships with staff and friends. Thank you to Dr. Hac for your many years of great care for Betty.
